im thinking about getting metal gear solid 3 subsistance, mainly for the metal gear one and two on it, but can you play online when you have a ps3 that IS connected online?

I would believe so, but I can't say with 100% certainty.

Last time I played MGO it was full of cheating and exploiting, something common with most PS2 online games.

I heavily recommend you buy Subsistence. The 3D camera is a great addition and if you don't like it you can always switch back to the overhead camera with justa click of the right analog stick. Not to mention all the extras, which I'm kinda too tired to mention right now, but trust me, they're all worth it. You can't lose with Subsistence.

^ditto. I just finished the game about a month ago. it's great, and every once in a while I'd switch back to the old camera style. it's horrible. the new subsistance camera angle's great.

It is really good in Portable Ops too.

I adore the past games, but its hard to go back to that static camera.

    You can't patch a ps2 game. It's MUCH worse.

It has MGS on it? Doh! I can't believe I missed that one! Serves me right for not keeping up to-date on console gaming news...

Yes, go for it. Mg1 and 2 make you realize just how inept you are though, so be prepared for some frustration.

Neither. It's an update of the very original one that was on the MSX. The NES version was based on that one, but was missing some important things (like the fight with Metal Gear itself).

    No, that's Metal Gear 2.

Metal Gear 1 was the original on NES.

Actually, Metal Gear 1 was released on the MSX first. The NES Ultra Games/Konami version of Metal Gear was *based* on the MSX version, but isn't the same game.

Moreso, Hideo Kojima wasn't consulted for the NES version of Metal Gear 2. Instead, he designed the true sequel on the MSX, which is why Subsistence has both MSX version included on the second disk, as they are the true games that follow the timeline of the franchise.

All of this is explained on the Metal Gear Saga vol. 1 DVD that came with the limited-edition of MGS3 Subsistence :D

Yeah. Basically, Metal Gear 1 for NES is an incomplete port, and Snake's Revenge isn't canon at all.
