Might as well not build any of these things, or instead opt to build a dozen cheaper vessels. You can't project power with just three warships.
These three ships by themselves aren't going to make a damn difference but here's how I see it. The Pentagon is undergoing a massive reorganisation and refocus following the Strategic Defense Review, so rather than plough ahead with all of these ships that might end up becoming obsolete or irrelevant, they're pushing ahead with a limited number so that these vessels can become testbeds for all of this new technology.
