Hi guys, I'm going to Beijing, Xi'an, and Shanghai next week. Can anyone recommend any must-do sights and great night life spots?

For Beijing, I have: Great Wall, Forbidden City, Olympic Stadium, Sun Palace, Tien amen Square and Mao's tomb.

    Xi'an Terracotta soliders

    Thanks!

Go to the Big Goose Pagoda at Xi'an - it's an imposing and magnificent building of great historical significance. I really wish Tunhuang was also on your travel manifesto - the desolation of that place is beautiful.

Shanghai? I'd avoid going near any Audi's or excavators then.

Did all that 2 years ago. It will keep you super busy and you're be exhausted at the end of each day. I did a group tour thing so I wasn't able to really do any KO shopping. Avoid the walmarts since they just have pure crap there. It's so bad that they have KO of KOs.

That's more Guangzhou/Canton/Hong Kong than Beijing, Shanghai, and Xi'an. Beijing's more about scorpions and other stuff like that.

    That's Singapore.

Stuff to see in Beijing aside from the ones you listed:

    1. Summer Palace and Old Summer Palace: it's more towards the northwest outskirts of the city but definitely worth a day trip if you can afford some time.

    2. Temple of Heaven: famous temple you see in a lot of pics.

    3. Mutianyu Great Wall: most tourists go to the Badaling part of the Great Wall which means a crapload of people struggling to get on and off the wall. The Mutianyu part is more steep and less visited by tourists.

    4. Wangfujing Road: newly redone, I think, featuring more shopping.

As far as nightlife in Beijing, there are usually lots of bars/clubs to go to if you're into that sort of thing. There are a ton of expats there due to all the embassies so there's always hotspots for nightlife. I haven't been back there since leaving there in 1997 after living there for six years but most of the clubs/bars behave like NYC and Vegas where the newest ones are always packed and lose luster after a year or two.

My brother in law is there right now taking Chinese classes so I can ask him what the nightlife scene is like.

Shanghai doesn't have much to offer as far as historical sites to see. It's definitely more of a food/shopping city than anything. It's definitely more modern than Beijing, although Beijing has caught up in the past few years with the Olympics and all.

Shanghai's kind of the same as far as nightlife goes but from what I've heard there's more live entertainment. Try the Bund area for nightlife.

I'll let you know if anything else comes to mind.
