okay, i am at a charity walk for the March of Dimes, helping out and while waiting to do the post event cleanup, i am talking to this "Kid" and his girlfriend asked him about working that night and he said no problem- he wasn't going to do anything but annoy customers.
(he worked at a Sonic, BTW.)

so, being "hip" i asked him if he was Randall or Dante.
he gave me a look like i was asking Dan Rather "what's the frequency, Kenneth?"

so i spent 2 minutes explaining "Clerks" and feeling awkward.

    yet another "old" moment.

ugh. I hate when i say something and it comes off like Dennis Miller's Monday Night Football nightmare.

    Ouch.

    "Fuckin' kids." [/customer] :p

Heey, I liked Miller on MNF. Maybe that's just because I actually got maybe 75% of his obscure-ass references? Then they go and replace him with Madden, who I find infinitely more annoying.

I too loved Miller, and can't stand Madden. "To win the game, they gotta score points." Ugh.

Far as Clerks, I didn't think it was that out of date. But hey, maybe you just introduced a classic film to some young'ns.

Madden: "Now here's a guy who can't see when the sun is in his eyes."

Also, I worked with a kid at this 2nd job I had for a while who didn't know who John Lennon was.

    I was sad.

I was in a Starbucks and made a reference to the civil war and the girl had no idea what I was talking about. I would keep giving up little bits about it to try and jog her memory. “You know the American Civil War. When the Union fought the Confederacy. The North Vs. The South… Slavery.” She just had this glazed over look and finally asked {“When was that?” I picked up my coffee, walked away and thought about moving to Canada.

Sad. Some people care more about whats going on in their own little lives rather than major historic events that happened to a lot of people a long time ago.

I"m kinda old school. Love classic TV, 80's stuff, etc. You ask me about any hip hop band or current pop band and you might as well be speaking Manderin Chinese.

But yeah a kid not knowing Dante and Randall from Clerks? I could understand if you made a Night Court or MacGyver reference.

The best historical joke I ever heard was in Athens, GA.

I was riding around with some friend who lived there, and we came to a light that had recently had a turn-lane added to it. The car ahead of us had Missouri plates, and the lane was apparently unexpected by them, so at the last second they sorta cut over into it, but ended up halfway in each lane.

My buddy who was driving looks and says, "Hey, it's the Missouri Compromise!"

I don't care who you are, that's a funny joke.

Ironically, you'd get a lot less of that here. I don't think there's a single Canadian old enough to read who hasn't heard of the American civil war.

We have period sketch comedy programs, for crying out loud!

EDIT vvv man you shut the hell up. rick green is awesome history bites is awesome.

Oh God, History Bites...our Comedy Network has the worst shows. They still show "This Hour has 22 Minutes" for fuck sakes. Horrible.

See, KA is down with Rick Green.

He taught a class in the Broadcasting program at Mohawk. Guy drops the N-bomb more often than you'd expect.

I was a kid in grade school who watched "North and South" and loved every minute of it. Ory Maine (Swayze) was my favourite character. Actually, my girlfriend and I recently rented and watched the entire series on DVD. Nostalgically it was a great time, except for "Heaven and Hell" the third part that never should have been written, let alone filmed. Just terrible!

    I mean, Madeline and George????"@!!@!
