the AC Adapter box that is connected to my laptop. The noise kind of sounds like a cricket. Any help please??? Thanx.
Is there a cricket in it? But... um... in seriousness. Usually if power adapters/supplies are making a "chirping" sound, that's a warning indicator, usually of a short circuit or other fault. Have you had any brownouts or surges lately while it was plugged in? Does it have a reset switch on it anywhere that you can throw to see if it stops it?
I'd take it to an electronics specialist, see if they can tell you what it is. Maybe get the make of the part, see if the manufacturer can supply a new one or if an electronics store sells one or a compatible brand. If it is making a strange noise you don't want to take any chances. Worst case, it might be dangerous.
You could have dirty power in the area, or could be from another device too close too it. Take it apart and put something non conductive between the noisy part and whatever it's touching, like a paper clip. Or if it has a fan, it could be dirty. Or take it apart and spray electronic parts cleaner on the bearing in the motor if it has one, when it dries, then spray some dry lubricant on the bearings
Can I put a vote in for "Don't take apart your power adapter" and especially "don't put metal things in it"? A lot of power related electronics have capacitors that can carry a killing charge.
I got shocked by 120V at work once. The actual shock wasn't so painful, but my hand went numb for about 5 minutes afterwards and then after that went away I had painful muscle contractions all the way up in my shoulder on the arm I got hit with, even though I didn't feel any pain there at all during the shock. But I felt fine after that. If that doesn't scare you I'd say take it apart and mess around with it.
There is no reason to open or try to fix a power supply if you don't 100% know what you are doing. Get a new one.
I just returned from Radioshack and bought a new one for $50 at a discount. Again I want to thank everybody for their advice including Chaos Muffin.
