Did anyone else get the feeling that optimus knew the only way to stop Unicron from destroying Earth was to sacrifice the matrix and loose his memory? Im guessing this is why he gave Jack with the key so they can get his memory back which I'm betting is stored on Cybertron somewhere.

    *knew

And maybe he had no idea what would happen and just to make sure he gave it to Jack for safe keeping.

If he knew he was going to lose his memory, why didn't he write "Megatron is a lying assbucket" on his hand before heading out?

I have a feeling he knew. Loss of his memory is probably one of the reasons he choose to give Jack the Key to Vector Sigma.

He didn't have any robo-Sharpies lying around?

Possibly he didn't know exactly what would happen, whether it was him exploding or memory loss or what. Ratchet only said he didn't think he was coming back, which covers Optimus being A) trapped B) impaired mentally or C) killed. He was just covering his bases.

But why didn't he just give it to Ratchet, you know, his long time friend.

Hell, why didn't he tell the other Autobots what would happen if he knew?

Because they would have tried to stop him.

Because Ratchet knew what it was, and would have known why Optimus was giving it to him. If the others Autobots knew that Optimus might loose his memories by using the Matrix against Unicron, I doubt that they're have gone along with the plan.

Agree with the above. Optimus thought memory loss was possible and put something in place so he could come back. And Jack was his best option because the other bots would stop him if he tried to give it to them.

I doubt he would anticipate joining the Decepticons after the whole Unicron thing though.
