You know, I would get a cat, but I got a leather sofa and love seat, and well, if the cat ever messed any one of them up, I would be really pissed. Also, I could let it roam in my finished basement, but you know how cats are. I'm sure it would find a way upstairs....

Thanks Everyone! I really miss the ones we lost, esp. Sue, we had her since I was in the 7th grade. If I ever scan a pic of Muttley I'll post him too, that cat was a monster.

I absolutely LOVE how many of us have Basement Cats! Mine has learned the sound of the camera turning on and stops being cute when he hears it. True evil.

Hey everyone, for those of you rhat own a cat(s) and also own, like, a leather sofa/couch, how do you go about keeping your cat(s) from clawing, scratching, ripping them up, etc...

    Just curious

I usually say NO very loudly, but any abrupt vocal sound will work, only stick with the one. Plenty of scratching posts and some training helps too. There is also a repellant spray but call the manufacturer to make sure that its okay for use on leather. Water gun when he does go after it and locking him out of the room when you're not home.

I am sure that others will offer advice as well.

For us, we got a scratching post. The only cat who actually uses it, however, is our kitten Coony.

Other than that, just yell "No."

Declawing is another option, though I can't be sure if it can be done to mature adult cats or not.

I put the Pharoh one on Butters, he wasn't happy either.

Don't own a leather couch. And if you do, and you're going to worry about it that much, don't get a cat OR a dog. Get something in a cage. And locking any pet in a basement alone for most of the time is a crappy life for the pet, too. They want to be with you and presumably you got a pet for companionship.

Depends on how much pain you want to put your cat through, both physically and mentally. An adult cat will know exactly what was done to them and that they are now defenseless, except for that nice set of teeth in their mouth which will get used, if they don't start hiding from everyone. Also, they won't be able to climb trees or run as fast to escape things like dogs should they accidentally get outside. Its amputation, literally, since they remove the first bone of the toe. Kittens do tend to forget and forgive, but adult cats don't.

Yeah, declawing is a definite no especially if you plan on letting them outside. Everyone we've talked to professionally and not said declawing is inhumane.
