If you think of it, Megatron's entire plan has been one long, impossibly convoluted story:

Megatron was under orders by the Fallen to get the Allspark, BUT, he had also made a deal with Sentinel Prime to go to Earth to drain it of Energy and resources, let alone pull Cybertron close to transport energy to the planet, BUT, he was also smart enough to keep his consciousness intact for the humans to build him a new body, AND, somehow knew that supposedly one of the ancient one's 'seeds' would be part of a bargaining chip that he could use to create metal to build a new army of transformers, IF the struggle for the Allspark didn't pan out, BUT...somehow he ended up making contact with Quintessa, becoming part of her faction to try and get the staff or whatever and revitalize Cybertron...I think?

Don't forget how every other part of this 'master plan' falls apart if so much as a SINGLE ONE of these things actually ever came to fruition.

I thought the medallion served as a "password" for the Knights. Those who had it in possession would not be harmed. So if anyone else found the staff, the Knights would defend against it.

It wasn't until after the medallion transformed and revealed itself to the Knights that the Knights stopped being aggressive toward everyone.
