Took a few in progress pictures to show the wonders of sticky putty for masking off areas too small for painters' tape.

Works for heads and faces, too. Do I get a prize?

I have an oddly colored mass of Super Sculpey that gets used like that all the time. I like it almost more than tape.

Once again Clay, You present a handy idea that some of us would not have thought about. I will have to keep this in mind.
    Thanks

What I use is actually a sticky putty. It's meant for holding paper notes to walls without needing thumbtacks. You can find it in office supply stores, or the aisle with paper/pencils in walmart, target, etc.

It's cheap, reusable, and lasts forever. I've been working out of the same $3 pack for two years, and have only used about 10%.
