One of the best oft-overlooked churches in Rome, Santa Maria dell'Orazione e della Morte, or in English, Saint Mary of Prayer and Death, was built by a confraternity that had charge of the unnamed and unclaimed dead in Rome. They'd have a mass for the unknowns' eternal soul, bury the corpses, wait for them to be reduced to bones, and then decorate their crypt.

I'm really surprised this thread hasn't garnered more attention.

That's awesome. My enemies used to throw spears at me so I made chandeliers out of them and a lamp from their king.

Is'nt there something like this under Paris, called the 'City of the dead" ? or something. Corridors made of bone

i bet skeletor would dig this joint.

also, that 'this bone's connected to the that bone' song would run to infinity up in there.

I saw this on the discovery channel a long time back, cool as hell. Sort of creepy, but cool.

That's amazingly creepy. Though I'd imagine it'd be good for keeping the kids in line.

Didn't this thing have something to do with depopulating a crowded cemetary?

That's the most METUL chandelier I've yet seen. Makes me want to visit my local cemetery and make a mobile or some windchimes.

In all seriousness though, that is an impressive site. Kind of eerie when you realise that those things were made from the remains of real people. Makes you wonder what they must have been like, or what they've seen...
