My hypothesis is he hid their fate because he knew they had the potential to bomb as badly as Jar-Jar Binks in TPM. If they worked well with audiences, he could just have them appear in TF3. If they bombed, we'd assume they were killed by Dev and few would lament their passing.

i'd really like to know why they never actually show the twins transforming.

I think the same reason we never saw Longhaul, Rampage, etc. transform - because they were either too difficult or technically impossible to show even quasi-convincingly. A lot of robot came out of those tiny ass cars.

I know, that bugged me so much.

I'm thinking it probably had more to do with the fact they didn't have the time.
Like it's been said with many things on ROTF they were rushed. They probably only had enough time to animated transformations for some of the characters.
Especially if the Twins were a relatively last minute change Bay added late into the production.

That was right after he combined and before he sucked up Mudflap.

They weren't. We started hearing things about them (their existence in the movie at least) near the beginning of the information cycle.

Uh-oh, Bay and Twins in the same thread. What could possibly go wrong? (all due respect, it's been civilized so far -maybe this one will survive).

EDIT: And it looks like Gozer-bot is banned now. At least that's one obsticle out of the way.

I think it might have been money. They had some really big really complex CGI shots in the film so after spending so much money on things like the forest battle, Devastator, and Prime out the back of the plane perhaps they had to save a bit of cash by not having to pay for some transformation sequences.
