If this has been posted already, sorry. Anyway, in the movie, Soundwave sounded like doctor claw from Inspector Gadget, not like his G1 voice. Now, to do the G1 voice, Welker used a vocoder along with using the doctor claw voice to make it sound like Soundwave. My guess why he sounded like claw was becuse they ran out of money to use the vocoder. The movie's budget was 200 million, and with all that special effects stuff, they probably ran out of money to get one. Or Welker didn't want to use it. Either way what's done is done, maybe they'll fix it for the DVD/Blu-Ray release of for the third film. or maybe he only sounds like Dr. Claw in his Satellite mode, and sounds like his G1 self in robot mode.

    Your Thoughts?

Monkey's paw. Fans requested Frank Welker, not vocoder-enhanced Welker.

True, that may be the reason.

Well, whatever the reason is, I highly doubt it was budget.

A dozen people on Youtube have already processed Welker's lines from ROTF. Here's the best one so far:

Why do they need to "fix" it? Soundwave sounded good IMO.

I love it. Not just because it is G1, but how electronically haunting it sounds.

I liked it the way it was in the movie. I always had trouble understanding Soundwave back in the day, and now it sounds kinda corny.

Very true. I was so excited that SW even appeared in it, perhaps thats why I was so dissppointed when he spoke. So we got Welker, but what was the point?

I can't see the voice being a budget issue. I thought they did a good job of it.

I was hoping they will change to his vocoder voice in the DVD/Blu-Ray. But I doubt it.

So we can actually hear Welker? If we're going to vocode the hell out of the voice, why even get Welker?

I thought the voice worked. It made Soundwave sound sinister, and there was some hint of a metallic edge (you can still hear it in that YT video, it's the "Located the shard" clip I believe) which I liked a bit more than straightforward Claw. You can still understand it and at the same time, it has that little something extra that enhances it.

I agree - the voice sounded great in the movie the way it was. However, that youtube clip did a great job of sounding like the 80s version. good for what it did, but i'm glad the movie version didn't have it. and lol what was up with 40 seconds of intro/outro credit for 20 seconds of content?

Whatever the reason I can almost guarantee it wasn't a budget issue. I can easily produce a vocoder effect on my $900 digital recorder. And I don't even have access to a SFX studio. Producing that effect would have been within budget and litterally within reach when doing the trillions of other SFX they did for the film. So, no it was not for that reason.

probably for the simple reason, they just didn't want to!

You know, everyone is entitled to their opinions and I respect that. There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting something to be better than what has been presented. That said, this whole issue of Soundwave's voice is really stupid when you realize the fact that only a small percentage of Decepticons had any spoken lines. Combine that with the fact that the only other voice actor from any past Transformers incarnation that provided their voice to a character was Peter Cullen. I'm not saying that everyone just has to up and accept what was given and not say a word, but G1 Soundwave and Dr. Claw from Inspector Gadget didn't sound all that diifferent aside from the voice effect. Also, I'm pretty sure Frank Welker couldn't give two shits whether or not they processed his voice once his check cleared.

Welker didn't like the vocoder, and Bay agreed because he felt it made his voice hard to understand.
