So about a week and a half ago, my laptop stopped working. I was online Friday night and shut down my laptop like normal, and on Saturday morning it just refused to start. No lights, sounds, nothing. Hardware error, presumably.

Fortunately, the laptop is just 15 months old, so the two-year warranty is still in force.

Unfortunately, I had failed to do any backups.

So when I got back my laptop today, I was presented with the fact that the system had been completely reset.

The only "backup" I have is my old PC's hard drive (which I have an external USB casing for), which dates from October 2010.

So if anyone got any files from me within the past 15 months and still has them, please PM me...

Ouch. (i thought this was about somethinh worst actually, good to hear its just PC related)

I had one of these 'shit i lost all my stuff on digital n no backup' too. Once with my student work, HD just went dead, early 2000s. An another where the HD had to be reformatted n the only copies of my artwork that was hosted online were watermarked, mid 2000. Happens to the best of us. I try to keep most of my creative stuff up somewhere hosted or achived in email. Even then there no guarantee your host/email can still fuck up.

    Better care next time dude.

That doesn't sound right. If it didn't power up it was either a power supply issue or a fried motherboard. Either way, as long as your hard drive wasn't affecting, you should have been able to get your info back.

Had almost the same thing happening to me last 2 weeks. My 2008 laptop disk-crashed on me. I installed Linux and was able to save all my stuff, just to realize the most important things I had on it were porn, Doom levels and comics. I feel so underproductive right now.

I was gonna say, it seems like if it was a Hard Drive issue the machine itself wouldn't be affected. Unless they both crapped out.

Man, I feel so bad for you. Hopefully people can help get some of the files you shared back to you.

Bah, sucky. Bummer, man. At least (I assume) you'll only fall foul to this once and will back up everything like a mofo from now on.
I'm paranoid so I always back-up anything I have the slightest wish to keep. When my main computer died a few years ago, even though it was full of files I had copies of everything. Sure it's a pain in the arse at the time but you'll be forever thankful for making the effort when the machine dies.

How am I supposed to do that if my hard drive (including my e-mail software) was deleted?

Back in the day when hard drives were smaller people would always have to back things up to make space for new stuff. I sometimes think hard drives are too big now and people put off backing stuff up because they have plenty of storage on the PC. My sister has thousands of photos she's taken stored on her computer and I keep telling her she needs to copy them to somewhere off the computer for safe back-up. All she ever replies with is there's plenty of space left on her hard drive still. I can't seem to make her understand. She's going to be very sorry when her computer finally dies (as they all eventually do) and she loses five years and more of pictures.

A lot of web-based email services such as Yahoo and Hotmail (probably others) can be configured to connect to a POP3 email service, such as the one your ISP or company may provide to you.
