A little something i've wondered about the original G1 Autobot Matrix of Leadership and the various matrixes carried by all Convoys/Primes later on.

The first Matrix was described as a source of accumulated wisdom by Optimus Prime himself and he seemingly delved into its stored knowledge in "The Return of Optimus Prime" eps.

But the most common representation of all Matrixes is as a source of great power that is used to 'light the Autobots' darkest hour'. Usually Primes use it when faced with their biggest threats.

So i am questioning the nature of the Matrix. What is it really? Is it meant to be a source of knowledge or great power? Or both? Does it grant Primes/Convoys power and wisdom?

It seems to me that it is more often than not just a mystical device of great power, but what are the capabilities of its power? Can it do more than just form powerful weapons? Is it a back-up source of power that kicks in if its bearers are weakened? Can it heal? Can it provide carriers with connections to other divine sources? Can it give Primes other powers and abilities? Does it make them stronger physically and mentally? And i wonder about the extent of wisdom that it may impart on its bearers. Perhaps it subtly guides the courses of action that Autobot leaders take as well as potentially giving them access to knowledge from time before them?

A couple of interesting uses of a Matrix might be observed in the BW2 and Neo series. Lio Convoy and Big Convoy possessed 'energon matrixes' which i always thought of as Maximal 'replicas' or 'pieces' of the original Matrix of Leadership given to all Convoys. Lio Convoy's in-built matrix apparently gave him the power to purify and absorb the energies of the planet Gaia. Big Convoy's matrix linked him to Cybertron's God Computer Vector Sigma, who would use Big Convoy's body as a vessel through which to impart its wisdom to others (which was not something Big Convoy particularly liked initially).

Please don't wander into "how come things are different in different series?" territory. The G1 cartoon Matrix is what Prime said it was. Other Matrices are what they are described as in their respective shows.

Well to be fair, I don't believe that it's explained why the G1 cartoon Matrix causes Unicron to explode. It was Simon Furman who came up with the idea about the Matrix being full of pure goodness and rainbows, which reacts violently with Unicron because he's pure evil... or something.

When you ignore the G1 comics continuity and look at the cartoon + '86 movie on their own, the Matrix is portrayed as both a source of wisdom and some kind of weapon. There's no caption explaining that Unicron is exploding because he hates wisdom *that much*, thus neatly tying the two concepts together.

So I think the question "is the Matrix a source of power or wisdom?" is a reasonable one, as far as the G1 cartoon goes. I also think it's pointless to put this much thought into it, since the storyines rarely make sense and are full of continuity problems. But I guess it passes the time.

Unicron was built by Primacron. Somewhere in the past, one of the Autobot leaders found how to trigger Unicron's self-destruct sequence. When the Matrix was opened, the self-destruct device was triggered.

Is this an answer I've pretty much made up? Yes. Does it fit the available facts? Yes. So... er... yeah. Enjoy.

    And its a good one.

I have always felt that the G1 matrix was just like many other myths......3 pronged.

It was a source or Power, Wisdom and Knowledge or Power Wisdom and Life.

It's a McGuffin and plot problem solver. :p

Personally I was always happy with it being the Creation Matrix in the comics, that alone made it special enough. Once it was sorta retconned to fit in with the stuff that happened in the movie and cartoons it just became - well - the first line of my post. Being just the Creation Matrix meant its function was somewhat defined. These days the Matrix is used for everything, from making a cup of coffee to recording everyone's soap operas.

Y'know, if the Matrix is a repository of the wisdom of past leaders then it must've sucked for the first guy as he'd have had nothing to get from it. You have to wonder how he came up with the idea of getting this container thingy and sticking some of his wisdom in it and then passing it on to the next guy with instructions to do the same.

Its more likely that wisdom is power. Nothing helps solve a problem like knowing exactly what the best way to solve it is.

    Wisdom.

Who is smarter a wise man, or a man with wisdom?

    Think about that.

I dont remember what episode it was, but in the g1 cartoon, Galvatron got his hands on the matrix and tried hooking it up to his gun. Well after that, the spirits of all the past primes come forth and raise a little hell.
So, it destroyed Unicron which would make it a source of power and it holds the spirits and knowledge of past primes which would make it also a source of wisdom.
Also I really like the take that optimus sledge has on it about it triggering Unicrons self destruct sequence. Good stuff.

    Knowledge/Wisdom is power.

It's the inheritor of the Matrix that decides what to do with this power, because with great power comes great responsibility.
