Hasbro wasn't the only one with a Toy Fair Catalog full of it's toy lines ads. I recently acquired the 1985 Toy Fair catalog for Tonka. You may or may not recall that back in early 1985 Gobots were a hot property.

So what do we see? The "Hot Shot" assortment of Gobots, early colors and decals, Puzzler as a Guardian (with many small mold changes), a really neat color design for the Power Warrior, and Twin Spin with rotor-crotch.

I can't believe I never noticed that that Gobot jet is a 'seeker'. The one in Starscream colours.

Those were some quality toys, and I have a lot of nostalgia for some of them, but god those names are just awful. Hasbro have all the rights to gobots, but with such lame names it's one reason they really aren't worth Hasbro's trouble creating homages.

    Awesome scans, thanks!

Man, I love seeing some minty Go-Bots. Sadly, they didn't survive childhood battles well.

Its not that they outsold Transformers. They existed first. lol. Tonka got wind of the plans by Hasbro to bring Takara/Diaclone figures out in the states and they copied Hasbro's technique with Machine Robo Figures. Gobots preceeded Transformers in 1984 in both toyline and TV show.

I've always been interested in Zod - that motorised dino-like mech...was there another Gobot that look like a dinosaur?

No, but he reminds me of Deadeye from the Starriors. Always wanted to see Zod and Deadeye in a fight. Deadeye is more intelligent, but also nearly blind.

At lower pricepoints, i generally preferred Robo Machi... sorry Gobots.

The basic ones were often at least as good a toy as mini-autobots or smaller gestalt components.

The marketing was poor. Especially compared to Hasbro's.

That's something people always seem to discount. While Turbo may not have been as nice as Bluestreak, bluestreak was about 3 times the price!

Turbo was a better toy than Windcharger, who would have sold for the same price.
