I'm relatively certain there's a fan made version of BOTW floating around in an 8bit top down format. I recall playing a demo of it, and it was pretty good.

Was that the developers who made a 2D mini-version just to see if the mechanics worked? Anyway, I'd just like to see the mechanics applied to a larger 2D realm in an official capacity. It can either be the last hurrah of the 3DS or the ultimate 2D edition on the Switch.

Yeah it was just the Great Plateau area. It really worked well.

Um... I don’t buy it. Even if it is coming from an official source.

That's weird. I haven't come across that anywhere in the book but I haven't fully read through it yet. In fact it's widely believed that the original Zelda took place in the bottom southwest corner (you can even see a small part that looks like a simplified map of Zelda 1) of the Zelda II map, Western side.

If we allow for enough creative liberty to accept Death Mountain as a loose adaptation of the Zelda 1 map, it doesn't really conflict with the Zelda II map, as all of that is to the northeast. The areas of Hyrule covered by Zelda II and ALttP don't overlap apart from the Zelda 1 region itself.

Someone on Twitter put this together

While it does seem a bit of a stretch, I can buy it; they do fit together nicely. I just remember when someone pointed out the little section of Zelda 1 map in the Zelda II map; that was a nice little easter-egg, whether it was actually meant to be or not. I also remember coming across this artwork years ago, and love how the artist incorporated both maps.

There are also loose parallels between the OOT and BOTW maps and the LTTP one. I wonder how well these could be pieced together to get a very rough lay of a unified Hyrule map.

The northeast labyrinth in BOTW is probably meant to be the Zelda II labyrinth island... which would put the eastern chunk of the Zelda II map in Akkala. Seems like there's too much water around it in that case though? Something something cataclysm, something something millenia...

I saw this map stuff on a different site and thought it was pretty cool, but what really had me intrigued was a comment on the story about a Link's Awakening remake. Is this a debunked story? All of the info I see is from January. Thanks!

One of my friends picked up the Encyclopedia. I only had time to glance through it and not read anything, but I didn't feel the need to spend the money to get it. I'll just read his.

First I've heard of this but doing a Google search it came up in January but seems to be just a rumor. Though I'd like to see Link's Awakening get some love, it really doesn't need a remake, especially since it did get a color makeover in the DX version.

Interesting that they incorporated cartoon lore into that map.

I do believe I remember that rumor from January, but it isn't out of the question seeing as:

    A) The culture is there at Nintendo for bringing somewhat obscure GBC games into the spotlight (Samus' Return on the 3DS last year, for instance)
    B) The Zelda team really likes Ballad of the Wind Fish. Symphony of the Goddess did it as an encore for almost every show.

The geography of Hyrule has always been a little odd. I can buy this being the case, it doesn't take a whole lot to justify the size difference between the ALttP Death Mountain and the Death Mountain region of the original game (that is, you're only seeing a small part of it, it doesn't really matter that the whole thing doesn't completely match up).

Now, the Minish Cap map, let's see them work that one out.

My wife gave me a 2DSXL for my bday along with ALBW & Ocarina, and I also downloaded the Oracle games (which I have never played) so I've been wallowing in Zelda lately. After hitting Breath of the Wild long and hard since March of 2017 (and STILL playing it regularly, just got the second Master Sword upgrade) I was a little worried that the older games would somehow feel awkward or uncomfortable, but nah - they're amazing. I hope Nintendo keeps making top-down Zelda games alongside the larger console titles, they both offer such different and distinct pleasures.
