I looked up the Laurentian Abyss on wikipedia, which is where Megatron and the other Decepticon remains were dumped.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laurentian_Abyss

In addition to the movie's incorrect statement that it's the deepest part of the world's oceans (that would be the Marianas Trench in the Pacific), the trench apparently has hydrothermal vents. Assuming Megs' body can survive the pressure, it appears that cold water may not be a problem. In fact, he may perhaps harness the energy, assuming the movie writers take that G1-style route.

neato. I honestly really just hope megatron doesnt come back. I think for live action, once a bot or con is dead they should stay dead. Thats my opinion anyway.

Hello there I’ve just finished watching Transformers (2007) for the second time around, I noted the place where the remains where dumped and its not quite the deepest part of the ocean, “Marianas Trench” is the deepest, not that I, would like to go down there? LOL Who researches the facts in these films? I mean a child could look this up on Google.

The Laurentian Abyss is where Laurence Fishburne came from. He was born a fish, hence his last name.

There were so many plot holes and errors that they made me just fall head over heels in love with the movie.

oh, I mean, uh, that I overlooked them all cuz almost every movie ever made has just as many and I don't care. As for the thermal vents, I like that idea for his triumphant return.

For the most part I'll agree, Jazz, Brawl, Bonecrusher, all of them should stay dead. But Megatron, well he should be the one bot who refuses to die, even when you think it's all over. Though I think keeping him out of number 2 and leaving Starscream to be the big bad in charge would be awesome. Megs should definately come back, stronger then ever, in number 3.

Let's look at this from a different angle shall we .....

Maybe the writers WERE aware that the Laurentian Abyss is not really the deepest location on Earth. Maybe they are leaving something to build on in the sequel. This way if Megatron does come back the military can be blamed and then they realize their mistake. This would leave open to possibility of Megs coming back. If it were the deepest, sure, they would have thought it could destroy him. But with it not being the deepest, he still lives.

As for the person/people who think Megatron should not come back, I do not agree. They are robots, not people, so I do not think the 'once dead, stay dead' rule should apply here. Their technology can adapt, we saw that in the first movie. To me, not having Megatron would be like killing off Prime and not having him come back at all. If anything, would be cool to see him come back as Galvatron.

yeah this sounds like just a writers error that nobody bothered to correct. I mean sure the gov makes mistakes, but their not stupid. the marianus is like twice as deep. Not something that an operation of the tf disposle scale would overlook. Just a script mistake.

I think it was chosen due to its poximity to the US. The US military are hardly likely to dump hostile alien robots into a trench that is within fairly easy reach of China, Japan, and North Korea.

Maybe they meant it was the deepest part of the ocean in close proximity to the US - (or the world as Americans like to call it) ;)

I agree with what he said if (the Red October) had its battle out, with one of the submarines in the (Pacific Ocean) then we wouldn’t be talking about the error at the end of the film.

Just be glad they didn't dump the cons in the Cayman Trough. Those tidal-wave-hurling NTIs woulda been REAL pissed off, and there's just not enough Ed Harris left to calm 'em down.
