Wonder Woman works as a character study of Diana. It pulls from her amorphous 75 year publication history and creates a satisfying cohesive depiction of who Diana is, presenting more of a character to flesh out the pop culture icon. Beyond that it's a boilerplate origin story with a cardboard cutout villain featuring a plot twist reveal that comes off like it's sent via telegram by M. Night Shyamalan. Visually, it suffers from having to fit into the Snyderverse, whose presence announces itself more intrusively than the opening of a pop song featuring Jason Derulo. But my wife, who has avoided the DCEU so far, loved it. I can't wait to hear what my 10yo WW-obsessed niece thought of it. I'm frightened of what happens to all this engendered goodwill once JL is unleashed upon the world.

Overall I'd give it a 7/10. Not clamoring to see it again, but super interested to see what WWII is like... (abbreviation pun intended).

    Wonder Woman - 9/10

I honestly felt the villain reveal could have been executed better but it was easily the best DC cinematic universe film so far.

Sadly that wasn't the collection I wanted to get.

I wanted to get this one but sadly found out it was sold out from the store I first saw at. But I guess the one I got is fine too. Saves more space for me.

Do you have a favorite Hitchcock film?

It's North By Northwest for me. Rear Window is a close second.

    Wonder Woman
The movie was okay. It falls into the super hero origin story trap all first super hero movies fall into. We see the hero's beginnings, a mentor/parental figure bites it, they go out into the world and find themselves in the process through an extremely basic character arc, we get a costume explanation, yadda yadda. Hopefully the sequel tells an actually interesting story instead of just settling for introducing the character and making them fight bad guys. Steve Trevor was the real hero of the movie.

Too long for what it was, could have easily been cut down to 90 minutes. It is an okay super hero origin story and as far as those go, it doesn't have anything that really makes it stand out for me like Ant-Man and Thor's strong visuals.

I don't even know that set. I only knew of the main one. That one there is pretty cool.

Mine are Psycho, Vertigo, and probably Shadow of a Doubt. However, The Birds, The Rope, Rear Window, North by Norwest, Notorious, and The Lady Vanishes are probably my other top favorites. The only ones thus far I really didn't care for are Saboteur and Family Plot.

BTW, Criterion is releasing The Lodger and Downhill in one set this month, so I plan to pick that up during the B&N sale next month.

Hasan Minhaj: Homecoming King - 9.5/10

One of the best stand-up specials I've seen in a long time. Extremely well crafted and polished, and probably the most (I cringe using this term) "millennial" stand-up performance yet. Whether he was using of visual aids with the screens behind him (from old family photos to social media posts) to vocabulary (he actually says "hashtag blessed") Hasan pushes the limits of stand-up here to be more than just a person standing on stage holding a mic.

The material itself is outstanding. Deeply personal and well-balanced, jumping between big laughs and poignant childhood stories.

    La La Land - 8/10

Was ready to give this a super-low score, as I hated the first half. Seriously, it was nothing but endless, gimmick-filled Hollywood/L.A. self-wanking. So smug and too in love with itself.

    HOWEVER...

The second half really came around and won me over, when it tightened its focus on the strong storytelling. Emma Stone is a true all-around talent. And while Ryan Gosling is a fine actor, he's completely mediocre musically (that fake piano playing was laughably bad).

Emma Stone might have talent, but she can't sing for crap. I don't get what is so great about La La Land. It's not even set in the 40s/50s, so why did it even get nominated for costumes? They were just every day clothes.

Doctor Strange - My first time watching it since opening night and I still loved it. There were some flaws I noticed with it this time around, but nothing too bad. It still opens a whole new realm of possibilities for the MCU and Cumberbatch is a wonderful Strange. 8/10.

Guardians of the galaxy 2: 9/10

As funny and more rounded than the first. This is what modern fantasy movies should look like! Bit gutted about
    Yondu
    , but
    he was
really given a prominent role this time with a
    hero's end.
    Epic stuff!
