    Once upon a time I was a complete, uncompromising stickler for maintaining and preserving every single vintage Transformers and Diaclone specimen, making sure condition never deteriorated and status never changed. My MISB would never become MIB, my MIB unapplied would never become MIB applied and my boxed would never become loose. I enjoyed collecting that way and being a part of that culture of toy buying and maintenance, but things have changed for me a little.

    Follow my un-sealing and stickering of a MISB G1 Darkwing - and why I did it - on Square One:

    Just an FYI, I saw TFSource's sale includes Encore Skids and Hoist, if anyone's interested.

    This that a Cookie Crisp Jazz there? If so, that's one heck of a way to start of your first post on the boards! Once you start collecting, you're going to be going deeper into the rabbit hole (as everyone here can attest to that).. :p

    A little Action Master love!
    [IMG]
    I do like the Action Masters, but man...when you see that Bumblebee's as tall as Grimlock and his head looks so massive! I draw the line at having a Devastator in there. That's just too much for my little heart.

    Thank you for this article! I've bought G1 KO's partly for the experience of opening them, but this takes it to quite a different level!

    Cross posting this reply!
    I've never owned an Action Master and never will(!) but they do look kinda great lined up like that!

    I remember when they first came out - I was told I was too old for toys (I was ten!) which is ridiculous as I'm thirty seven now and I fucking love toys! So the only experience with them I had was seeing them at a friends house. I thought they were basically gonna be G.I. Joes (Action Force! We all know they were really Action Force!) with a Transformer 'skin'. I was disappointed that they were lacking in that basic articulation that Action Force had. I thought the legs were great (did they have knees? I remember knees!) but no elbow joints! Still, they were pretty great representations of the characters in that cartoon that allegedly existed! (I'm in the UK - I never got to see it much!) So yeah, that's a lot of rambling really just to say great pic! :D  Thanks for the memories and all that...

    As some of you know, my collecting mostly focuses on robot toys of the seventies and eighties. In collecting these figures, I have increasingly come to appreciate how very much the early Transformer designs fit in with general trends in 70s and early 80s Japanese toy design. Colour schemes using combinations of red, blue, and yellow are common, as is the use of chrome. The blockiness of figures like G1 Optimus Prime and Blaster is mirrored by that of many of the Super Robot figures that invaded Japanese television following the success of Go Nagai's Mazinger Z, and even the 'horns' seen on the heads of many figures are a common feature.

    To illustrate, I've taken a photograph of G1 Optimus Prime with a number of other figures made by Takara and Bandai. What I think this also shows is that early G1s display well with other robot toys of the era - arguably more so than with actual Transformers of later generations.

    Seen in this pic are:

    Back, left to right
    * 1975 Bandai GA-09 'Brave Raideen'
    * 1981 Takara Diaclone Dia-Attacker (horns missing)
    * 1982 Bandai GB-73 Dairugger XV ST ('Miniature Vehicle Voltron')

    Front, left to right
    * 1981 Bandai GB-33 Sun Vulcan Robo ST
    * 1984 Takara/Hasbro Transformers Optimus Prime
    * 1984 Bandai MR-18 Truck Robo ('Road Ranger')

    So, I get the impression that people hate Longtooth. Is that right? Am I basing that on this note about Nick Roche on the tfwiki? Is it just because he sucked in the comics? Of the 'small' pretenders he easily my favourite of the Autobots and probably in my top 3 after Bludgeon and Octopunch. I like 'em all monstery, I guess? Here's hoping he gets an update in PotP. A little Titan Master sized Walrus man is just too good an opportunity!
