Do you guys remember the very first song you've ever downloaded (legally or not) on the Internet and what year?

For me it was sometimes in 1995. It was a RealAudio (.ra) file, a live version of R.E.M.'s "The Wake-Up Bomb", a song that was unreleased at the time. Exciting times. But like most .ra files at the time, the song was all distorted and compressed, barely listenable.

You mean illegally downloaded, or just bought online? Either way, that would probably be either the Star Wars theme or the Imperial March, way back when I was in middle school in the mid 2000s. I've legally bought both since then.

I remember my friend downloaded the Get A Grip outtake "Head First" by Aerosmith in 1994, the very first song ever made available (at least officially) on the Internet apparently. A .wav file that took him hours to download.

Wow that takes me back! Probably something by Puff Daddy or whatever crap was out in 1997.

However I also remember having a snippet of Spice Girls' "Wannabe" :confused2

1994? Must've taken half his hard drive space too :D

I don't remember all the music I got off the old Napster when it was still around, let alone the first ever. Actually, one of the first mp3s I downloaded period (I'm not sure Napster was even around yet back then) was something off mp3.com in 1999 or 1998 - I can't remember the name and with my dial-up connection, I don't think it never ended up even finishing >_>

Funny, I thought about starting a topic about this. I think my first MP3 was Frozen by Madonna back in 1999. Back then I had to use the school library computers to download songs and split them onto multiple floppy disks to bring them home. Yeah, I had a whole box of floppy disks with me just for that purpose. Flash drives were still a novelty. :p

I used something called iMesh, around year 2000 I think, and downloaded 'Aces High' by Iron Maiden.

    Hm...

I think the first one I actually did myself, not get from my cousins or friends because i was too lazy/dumb to do it, was the stan bush song all transformers fans know by heart.

Pretty sure it was a Metallica demo song off some website, way back in the mid 90's, I was searching Webcrawler for "Metallica" and this dudes site had a few demo songs that were never released. It was a .wav file as well and on a 14.4 modem, took half a day I think lol I remember my mom always getting mad when I was downloading stuff cuz she couldn't use the phone.

I'm not QUITE certain of the computer we were using, but I think it was a pentium MMX 166, it was a fairly good machine at the time, it could even play Quake when it came out, but not very good, so we got a new one like the year after that.

that thing would play Warcraft like a God though! Windows 95 was the shit!

I didn't really buy any music on the Internet until I got an iPod in like, 2007. I legally paid for a couple All American Rejects songs, I think. Move Along came out the previous year, so...

That was the 1st CD I bought, but as far as the 1st song I downloaded online, it was probably something by the Peppers, and likely even Scar Tissue couse it was popular at the time & I'd have figured it to be an easy one to find. I was pretty late on this boat to begin with, but once I got started, I wasn't long before I was pretty much set up for life.

Edit - Actually, I think it was some DBGT Final Bout songs from this website that had free MIDIs, namely the Trunks & Kid Buu themes. Could be wrong, but I was into that shit even before I had Napster, so maybe.
