We all know that Megatron had an alternative design to begin with, which was this:

And that design was based on this:

So my question is, was that toy ever released in the Microman range? If it was never released, does anyone know why?

    No, it wasn't.

Possibly it didn't work as a toy (engineering). Possibly the version that did get release was cheaper to engineer. Possibly someone preferred the design aesthetic of the version that did get released. Nobody knows exactly why, unless someone who worked for Takara at that time comes forward and discusses it.

they should have thrown the actual head on that one and released it as an encore, or the original, either or, that toy design is 10x better than what we got,

One of the first TV commercials for G1. Actually, I believe it's THE first one ever.

Might just be me but I feel that Earth Mode Megatron's head on "Animated" is an homage to that.

microman/diaclone catalogues often had prototype models and drawings in them, the early car robots show the insecticons for eg as prototypes, quite different from the final designs.

Wow, that design is actually superior to the Megatron we did get.

I don't know if you guys are familiar with this picture

but assuming that this is not a resin model like the Astrotrain prototype, it might have worked very nicely as a toy.
