Something just occurred to me, are they also called the Dreads be cause they have dreadlocks? And sorry to contribute to the plethora of horrible movie threads.

Serious, that could've very likely been the inspiration for the name.

I thought it had something to do with being dreadful. Like terrifying and hideous.

Mostly because of the dreadlocks, but "Dread" can also be used to reference terror or a frightening image/reputation.

Edit: GFH beat me to it.

Weren't they called "Dreadnoughts" or the slight respell "Dreadnaught" at some point? Several real-life battleships and fictional works (particularly sci-fi) use the term; seems a bit more likely "Dreads" is just a shortening of "Dreadno(/a)ught" than a reference to one of the physical features the trio shares.

The dreadlocks themselves come across as a pun added in later in development, kinda like Devastator's wrecking balls.

I'm not saying it was the sole reason, more like a double entendre. They're dreadful dreads.

They're pretty much the Con equivalent of Wreckers. The Wreckers were shown to 'wreck' their enemies and therefore the Dreads probably got their name for striking dread and fear into the sparks of their enemies.

I think Bay had a dream, which lead towards creating the Dreads. No, seriously, I'm really sure that is true.

The Dreads Were a reconnaissance/assasination squad capable of putting fear into the hearts of their enemies. How ever I don't really think the Wreckers in this continuity put in a literal term, I'd love if someoneproved me wrong.
