Got scout class Scalpel/"The Doctor" and I've run into an issue...

How do you get him to stand in robot mode?

Tho official photos and instructions show his legs sprayed out, insect-like, but the limited range of the ball-joints (an oxymoron I know) prevent them from spreading out enough to point in any direction but back inwards. Like so:

    .__
    |__
    /
    \

The only way I've found to make him look, in any way, accurate (and in-fact, stand at all) in robot mode is to rotate the upper body so that he rests on the base of the microscope (black side up), fold the bases panels down to form a smaller one (so that it forms an "I" shape when viewed from underneith), and rotate the legs so that they point outwards. They still can't spread far enough apart to actually touch the ground, but at least it stands and looks "kinda-right".

    ___./\
    _|

Is there something I'm missing here or is that how it's supposed to be? It just seems odd to me that the legs wouldn't be able to be positioned for support at all... I mean, isn't that what legs are for? :dunce

Each one of his legs are made up of two pieces, make sure the top part of each leg has the spikes sticking out and not in, this wil help a little bit with balance, other than that I have no idea, mine stood fine after I did that tiny tweak to each leg.

I looked at various shots of him online to figure it out. Being packaged in a "not quite robot mode, not quite microscope mode" really messed me up when trying to read the instructions.

The problem isn't balance, it's that the legs fold in, but they don't fold out.

They won't go any wider than this:

    ./
( <-- "The ball joint knees prevent any flexing beyond this angle."
    .\

Upward pressure, from setting him on the ground as an example, will collapse the legs inwards, so that he's walking/resting on his knees:

    ./
    (
    .---

    .^
    .|
    .|

The only counter to this is to turn the bottom upside down, which allows him to stand, and allows the legs to point up and then outwards and down:

    ........ \/.......
    .....(@_@).....
    ../\....||.../\..
    /....\_||_/...\.
    .......|..|.......

But they still don't touch the ground because where the legs connect to the base, they still cant spread more than a few degrees outward.

So yeah... he can stand, and I can have his legs in a vaguely insectoid, screen-accurate spread and position, but they cannot touch the ground or be used as support.

I mean... I guess I can live with it as-is... but it just seems odd that the legs would be unable to be positioned in a way that allows him to... you know, use them...

Sorry for a dumb question, but are you aligning the legs and black end pieces together? One set of legs slides up and down, and both black cover bits do too. I know the back of the packet has those black bits folded out as though they go over the top ball joints in his legs, but the way I have it is they fold completely up onto his back.

The only thing I can think of is when you're saying they don't fold out, is that you haven't aligned them properly?

I have mine standing correctly. I can take a couple of photos if it helps.

Basic standing pose. You can see how I have the legs positioned, and how the black pieces are folded up onto his back.

    Image182.jpg

    Image183.jpg

    Side and front view.

    Image185.jpg

Close up of the legs. The spiked bits need to face outwards.

    Image186.jpg

Underside. This is how it should look from the bottom in order to ge him to stand.

    Image187.jpg

The right side in this picture shows his left set of legs slid down (apart of the transformation). It needs to be pushed up so it lines up with the other side.

    Image188.jpg
    Image189.jpg

These black bits need to slide down in order to fold up onto his back.

Hope these pics help and I haven't totally missed the point =P
