I'm an Autobot fan, but I just came to this realization of admiration for the Decepticons that I posted in another thread on MySpace, which was prompted in response to a board member there.

    Megatron is evil ingenius.

Starscream is exteremely treacherous and cunning.

Soundwave is a model of efficiency and planning.

    Shockwave is persistant and unyeilding.

Some of the other Decepticons aren't always terribly bright, but probably a majority of them actually are really that dangerous.

The new ones featured in the movie including Barricade, Frenzy, and Blackout are totally resourceful. Brawl and Bonecrusher might be nuts, but we don't know for sure.

But the capabilities exhibited by the Decepticons are as MySpace board member Tinnitis related - very impressive. They are great villains that really challenge the Autobots.

I give them credit for making Optimus Prime look that good, since it is up to him to cope with these enemies. If they were just easy push-over one-time, one-dimensional villains, we wouldn't be that impressed with Optimus either.

You have to give the Decepticons credit where it is due

Depends on continuity and medium. In the G1 cartoon, he was more like "crazy cackling maniac whose plan to conquer the universe basically is 'Let's steal something the humans invented'".

Again, depends on continuity. In the cartoon, he was way too blatant.

In the cartoon, he was the unambitious janitor of Cybertron...

*Tongue in cheek* I always found Skeletor a more convincing villian.

    Disagree.

Megatron-I viewed him more in the light of stealing energy from Earth to rebuild Cybertron. More of a destructive, evil idealist.

Starscream-I think that was the point. He was treacherous but his downfall was the fact that he was so arrogant it made his attempts blatant and unsuccessful. Also this arrogance led to early victory claims as well. :)

Shockwave- I will agree with the unambitious part but that is circumstantial and a highlight of the loyalty characteristic since his leader basically left him there. Shockwave (cartoon not comic) is loyal to a fault and does what he is told. That is why he is placed above Starscream in the first place.

In the the old comic Shockwave actually took control of the decepticons at least one, also Megatron was seen as a insane dictator. Starscream was treacherous but it was more behind the scenes.

I'm not sure I'd say they're the greatest villains ever as I consider some of the Marvel and DC comics villains to seriously trump them in all aspects of villainy. However, I will give them props for being more than your average Saturday morning villains.

That list of the "best villains ever" better include David Xanatos.

I think Master Megatron got pretty close to being a truly great villain.

I'm not talking about stuff like beating up some puny humans or stomping puppies. He was going to eradicate the frikkin' universe, along with the very fellow soldiers that were helping him, and recreate it in his own image. Now THAT is villainy of epic proportions.

I agree with Johnator about G1 cartoon Megs. Almost every encounter centers on the Decepticons doing the one thing that won them Cybertron before Unicron showed up: gathering energy. For all his prowess as a combatant, Optimus seems effectively clueless about the real battle being waged. He thinks he's up against a Rommel or a Patton, but really he's up against a Marshall. I don't know if that's what the show's writers intended or not, it's what I came away with.

Also, I really hope I live long enough to post the book that includes Megatron's speech (already written) given from the gladiator's arena when he officially announces the Decepticons.

I prefer Decepticons to Autobots, but I actually think they're pretty mediocre villains from a storytelling perspective. Marvel Shockwave and Bludgeon were really cool, Thunderwing maybe, but Megatron and Starscream have always been doofuses

He's the guy who could be totally alone, penniless, and bleeding to death in an alley, and still say "No problem, this is all part of a much larger plan." :)

I think the G1 episode where some Decepts tried to lead without Megs failed sum everything up. In a certain sense G1 Megs is a good leader, but surrounded either by idiots or self-centered power hungry minions who screws everything up. I especially liked "Megatrons Masterplan pt1./2", where he nearly got the power he wanted.

...yeah, only Megatron's Master Plan sucked. :p

When the mayor says "How could have we been so stupid?", all I can say is that it's a very good question...
