Who remembers here here Jim Henson's 1982 film The Dark Crystal.

The Story about another world, another time, in a age of wonder...

Where the beautiful and powerful gem of the world of Thra, the Crystal of Truth, cracked and gave the birth to two new races; The Cruel Rulers, Skeksis, and the Gentle Wizards, the Mystics...

Is the story of the young Gelfling Jen, the last of his kind,is destined to bring the balance to his wounded world...

Who could forget it? I love this film. It is one of the few that I make a point to watch every year, usually around my b'day in November.

Fun fact. I was born in 1982.

But yeah this is a great movie. My brother and I quote it often.

One of my favorites. I still wish the Genndy Tartakovsky sequel would have happened.

I love the movie. It is truly Jim Henson's masterwork, it showed what he could truly do with his talents if taken to the utmost expression of them.

I used to have really fond memories of this movie, but I watched it again recently and realised it's actually a bit crap.

Wasn't there talk of a sequel or remake or something?

It had been so long since I had seen the movie that I didn't get the reference to it till a friend pointed it out. Also, after watching it again I had to go look up the voice actor for the Chamberlain because he sounded so much like Chris Latta.

Dark Crystal is an amazing film. It's too bad Muppetry has more or less been forgotten in favor of CGI (Except for in the case of the actual Muppets of course, and Sesame Street). The era of Jim Henson is something I really miss.

A Skeksis-like species did crop up in Farscape once as a species called the Halosians. Not surprisng since Farscape's puppets were done by the Henson Company. If I remember correctly though it wasn't the old Skeksis suits being reused, just the Halosians being heavily inspired by them. John Crichton even refers to them in a throwaway comment as Skeksis at one point in the show.
Do a Google Image Search for 'Halosians' to see them. :)

I downloaded an xvid of this, since I love most of Jim Henson's other movies, didn't like it at all. I prefer Labyrinth much more than this, it also has Jennifer Connelly, my ideal girl.

I always liked the Dark Crystal - it's a good movie to break out and re-watch every now and then. Has a great '80s vibe to it.

I've tried to get my daughter to watch it with me, but she much prefers Labyrinth.

While there is indeed the benefit of Jennifer Connelly, when I came back and watched Labyrinth again after many years it just didn't entertain. Pity really as both this and The Dark Crystal were so fondly remembered but just don't stand up for me today. It's not like it's even because it's old or puppets because I do still enjoy shows and films with those things.
I guess I should've just left Dark Crystal and Labyrinth as happy nostalgic memories rather than watch them again now and kill them for myself.

just watched the movie for the billionth time and came looking to see if it had a thread on here. i wont go into all the adoration i have for the film, so ill just talk about some recent thoughts. first, i just found out that another prequel book had been released a few weeks ago. it has been very well received, so i will get around to reading that ASAP.

also, i was just thinking about how the original theme behind the skeksis was the 7 deadly sins, which were mostly still used, though somewhat blurred as more skeksis were made. so, i kinda thought about if that idea was run with, what 7 skeksis would be in it and represent what sins.

Hey, I didn't know there was a Dark Crystal thread.
I loved this movie when I was younger, and I still love it. The production values and the amount of detail is astounding, as is Trevor Jones' score. It was also the first movie I ever bought on DVD, which blew me away with all the deleted scenes, workprint scenes, and character information.
I find it fascinating that the Skeksis were originally supposed to speak only in an alien language, and basically were dubbed in English at the last moment.
