As I spoke to Shane McCarthy he told me some interesting facts about AHM.
1/ the idea for drift came from his house mate. His house mate is a huge fan of Japanese Drift cars and as Shane thought transformers were created in Japan so why has their never been one. So came the creation of Drift. All other info about the character will be revealed in the 4 part series of Drift.

2/ The cigar that Kup smokes was NEVER meant to have the crystals in it. Shane told me he just felt because Kup was a old veteran transformer that it would be befitting for Kup to smoke it and that it would look good on him. It was the writer for the spotlights that chose to make it for his addiction to those chrystals.

I hope this it of info helps every one in learning some thing new today about these two characters in the development of them through out the series.

Yeah, the problem with that mentality was that there already were Drift cars in Transformers (Getaway for one). Its an unfortunate case of lack of research. Also, while the origins of Transformers come from Japan (Diaclone, Microchange), Transformers themselves are an American creation.

Looking good is fine but this is a fandom that tends to demand answers for every little detail added in. If Nick Roche wanted to add further details as to why Kup was suddenly "smoking" a "cigar", he had every right to do so; especially if Shane McCarthy doesn't provide a reason as to why.

Thanks for providing but honestly, not much of a necessity.

Who cares does every thing need to have a full researched reason....NO! the fact is that they are the REASONS why and second Shane gave a reason he wanted Kup to smoke it because he was a veteran it was NOT meant for Nick Roche to go and do that to it okay. Seriously who cares on the formality of it all they are the reason accept it or not .

"does every thing need to have a full researched reason..." Yes, when one is claiming the reason he/she has done something is because it was never done before.

I was eyeing off Drift's toy in the shop today and I have to say, I actually think it looks pretty good lol

As for the 'cigar'... I don't care that an explanation was eventually given, but come on people - sometimes a cigar IS just a cigar :p

damn straight coinillius. And no you dont NEED to do the full research on something a cigar can just be a cigar it doesn't need to be written later as ohh it had a bit of chrystal in it so to keep him straight. No it looked awesome on him as an old veteran soldier leading his men to battle.

Coin you should get him he is awesome! I have 2 drifts one signed by Shane himself. The fact is that not one fan can remember EVERY single character out there so what if he didn't do full on extensive research it does not matter at all. He made a character a unique and original character which you rather love or hate and he showed that the two waring sides at this point are not that much different. That is what he wanted to show in this story and he did so brilliantly. I for one cant wait to see what he has done for the origins of "Drift". I was lucky enough to be able to see some of the last edition in his book, yes I have seen part of last "drift" comic before it hits shelves" and let me tell you what I read was fantastic!

There's "full research" and there's "giving some bloody respect to what other creators before you did". Which Shane McCarthy did not do with Kup. And yet Roche, rather than do the same and just ignore what McCarthy did, intelligently folded McCarthy's ideas for the character back into what he had originally created, and produced what most people are saying is one of the best single issues to come out of IDW.

    .....Whatever.

IDW's comics went downhill when he arrived anyway.

Wow, what a moron, this Nick Roche guy!

Shane McMagnificent just wanted to do something that comes across as EXTREME HARDCORE ULTRA COOL, and this Dick Douche dude rewrites it to actually have some character/plot relevance! HOW DARE HE! It's OBVIOUS there was never meant to be a point to it, so how can he DARE to turn it into one? This is what happens when bad writers don't respect the intentions of good writers!

    ^this.

Having a cigar for the sake of having a cigar is fine for a human character; it's well accepted that it is a way for humans to relax/take the edge off/look badass. But when it pertains to robotic life, badassery is secondary to why they would be doing something that is a direct human analog merely for its own sake.

Eh, no, I don't necessarily agree with that. Kup sucking on a cigar was amusing. It didn't need to be explained. It's like ROTF Jetfire and his cane. It's just getting part of the character's personality across with an accessory. The way Roche smartly worked the idea back into what he was doing in the first place, and even tied it in with part of the plot from his first story, was more of a showcase for how good HE is, rather than an indictment of what McCarthy did. In fact, he didn't even discount the existence of cigars ("cy-gars", as he even NAMED them), making it clear that they did exist - he just added an extra layer of story to why Kup had one.

Just a question for those complaining about Kup's cigar

Obviously a hypnotic device to force people into his sales' pitches. ;)

But seriously, I have no problem with Kup munching a cigar, or with Nick Roche expanding on it. Authorial intent doesn't mean much if it isn't actually put in the story, and Nick Roche is a cool dude.

I figure they created Drift since he will be a blank slate characterwise & they can build him how they want to. If they had taken an existing character & done what they wanted, there would be fanboys whining left and right how the character is different then how he was always portrayed. Yes, even an obscure character like Getaway has fans & there is some nut who considers him the greatest TF character ever made & any difference to his personality violates his childhood.

I’ve decided I am unable to make a reasonable response to this thread other than to say it reaffirm everything I have ever said or though about Shane or AMH.

Then why do we have female transformers as well? It's not like protoforms need to have breast milk. But female transformers still have breasts.

The fact is that they are still alien life forms and not JUST robots. Why can't an alien munch down on a gigar or cy-gar as they are now called and if we remember the conversation that spike had.
Why are you smoking a cigar
    What's a cigar?
There is the reason WHY it should not of been called a cy-gar as ironhide even said that thing must be ancient and something else on the lines of you know they will kill you.

Also I doubt Shane will be happy if any one touches Drift and does there thing to him. Hence the reason why IDW has brought Shane back to do the Drift mini series. Shane said he wants to work more on transformers but it is up to IDW more so then up to him. Personally I loved what he did on AHM it was beautiful how he showed that the Decepticons and the Autobots were two armies that weren't all that different and that all the problems one side had the other had just as much. I especially loved the hatred other Autobots had for Drift, how ever with both Kup and Perceptor sticking up for him with Perceptor being saved by Drift and Kup knowing what its like to kill his own kind and be given a second chance both of these characters saw a reason why to give Drift that chance that Drift deserved. How ever the hatred towards him from main stream characters like Bumble Bee was there from the start.

What he did with AHM was beautiful and even showed us that even though in old school cartoons if the Autobots were brain washed or the Decepticons dressed up as the Autobots, humans wouldn't just re-accept the Autobots back with open arms. Good bad your all robots from the same species and if there was ever a chance of the humans accepting the Autobots that chance was long gone. That to me was just the icing on the cake as it showed us a new side to it all that no human was really going to accept them for bringing their war on to our planet. That is my opinion and if you don't like it meh I don't care.

You seem to be under the impression that Drift is something more than a 1-dimensional half-assed Wolverine Ripoff.

Don't feel so bad, I've seen otherwise intelligent people make the same mistake:)

EDIT:Oh and I don't see what's wrong with making the cigar a plot point, then again I've never read a mainling IDW transformers comic, and, considering the state of the continuity, I'm not sure if I'm going to...Roche sounds like the only guy who still cares.

Ahhh I dont see Drift as a wolverine Rip off. I just like he character and second if you read AHM you two would see what I am talking about how only Kup and Perceptor accept him until Prime comes back and also gives him a chance. All the others except the wreckers really don't like him at all because of his past. Also Shane DOES give a rats ass because he is a transformers fan himself.
