I strongly agree overall. However, his narrative about "aging up" comics only works if you start at the Silver Age. Golden Age super hero comics weren't sophisticated material, but they weren't strictly kid stuff either. They were "aged down" before they were "aged up."

    the reality trap

    how very determinist

certainly reflective of this pseudorational era

they will call it the binary age
a great many valves operating with subtle clicks
    insignificance sans sound sans fury
a machine that follows its sequential code
    and yet
    who programs the machine

    because programming is creative
    generative
    the blank form acquires meaning
ex nihilo, and sometimes from less
we shift the palette, evade the pitfall
and so it is with art

    when i sit down
with a pencil before a paper
    i am not a product
the zeitgeist is just one palette
    the paper is blank
and i can draw what i want

and perhaps i make a comic

    ant man

    cable

    chobits

    areala warrior nun

    whatever

    someone will call it escapism
    so clever so adult
like a child wearing big shoes
    saying daddys words
    without the regret
the innocent state of a naive critic
    because escapism
    is a funny word
    and reality
as they seem to understand it
    a grown up thing
    dull
    not childlike
    like the burning sun
    that rises in the morning
    inspiration for poets

    (escape)

    warmth in cold space

    (escape)

    this is not reality
    it is not grown up

taxes and bills, wars and plague
    bullies and injustice
you should think about these things
    they are real
    your late reports
    so real so adult
    your icy obligate attachments
    oh yes very real

dont you stop thinking about them
dont you look at the sunrise
    because you might forget
    and write a poem
    and that is escapism
    so immature
    because beauty isnt real

    though

    if the sun stopped
    and the beauty went away
reality ga nai n da yo

    but let the critics talk
    they are children
    it is cute
    when they think they know

    csi

    yeaaah

    so silly, nothing like that
    so dull and routine
a lie for the little kid critics
    because

    when a detective sits
    when a programmer sits
    when a checker punches in
when a farmer washes down coffee with a shot of old crow

    escape

    the facts are parameters
    walls define the field
    the battle is within
a raid on the vaults of truth
hidden in the packet of evidence
    a battle in the mind
slaying beasts that steal the data
a defense of an ideal city
    against the ranks of chaos
    and another battle
in humankind's old war for food
outside it looks dull and quiet

    but inside

a war you could only show
with heavy dark ink and gouache
    alliterative yellow verse
    kirby and stan lee

    because without escape
    into the mind
    into the possible
    there are no ideas
the most real thing of all

    but dont admit it
dont talk about the war within
    punch out go home
    and wear the grownup shoes

    because

    escape is not grown up

    and thats it
    the end
    unsatisfying
for the critics in daddys grownup shoes
    poor haunted children
    the zeitgeist stole their crayons

    its sad because

    the next pages

    are all blank

    draw your conclusions

Also, I encourage everyone to take a few minutes & actually read through the article instead of just the comics, even if you're not big readers. It'll probably be worth it. :)
