I mean their sparks were in a prison and each cell had different numbers. I am starting to believe that they arent soldiers but they were criminals or terrorists long time ago.

They're the Decepticon's version of the A-Team, in my imagination.

Depends on who you ask. The Decepticons would say they're soldiers, and the Autobots would say they're criminals.

The thing that worries me is the Decepticons kept them in prison, seriously they're not Autobots so why would the Decepticons keep them locked up?

Funny you'd say that, because I remember seeing a YouTube vid showing the Combaticons with The A-Team theme song playing in the background a long while back.

And it's because of that vid that I've pretty much come to think of the Combaticons AS the 'Con version of the A-Team. :lol

Cartoon wise, G1 continuity rarely holds for more than 20 minutes.

Ha ha, needed that after doing a final today. Really reminds me how not toy accurate the show characters were.

Well, the cartoon referred to them as "Renegade Decepticons". My interpretation of that is they just did whatever the hell they wanted and didn't give a rat's ass about Megatron or the Decepticons, let alone the Autobots. I guess that would make them deserters by Decepticon standards.

By Decepticon standards, being a 'criminal' or 'renegade' could have just boiled down to not following orders to Megatron's satisfaction. (perhaps they were originally imprisoned at a time when there were plenty of available 'Con troops, so taking them out of the game then was no big deal). In the loose cartoon continuity, they all had personality issues, (not really any more than any other Decepticon) but the only one who really acted against Decepticon interests was Swindle (in "B.O.T."). That's post- Megatron's 'reprogramming' though, so the Combaticons were probably a bigger hassle at times not directly covered - in the cartoon anyway.

I always liked the notion that they were Decepticon soldiers and then there was a political regime change in the Decepticon heirarchy. Suddenly they were considered criminals and locked up.

Y'know, kinda like happens in real life from time to time.

I did find it amusing the Combaticons were called Renegades while Omega Supreme's kind were called Guardians.

The Combaticons were "Renegade Decepticons" ... They were political Prisoners Detained on Cybertron ....under the orders of Megatron , Shockwave had their personality components removed from their structures. Their structures were subsequently destroyed. Until the episode "Starscream's Brigade" , they ere held in the Decepticon Detention Center.

So , in a way ... No they aren't Soldiers ... they are Called "Combat"icons because of them acquiring combat vehicles as their new for and new alt modes .... plan and simple .
