You guys have no doubt seen the recent Wii commercials, that has the two japanese gentlemen driving to the family's house, and saying "Wii would like to play". Well, I'd like to know what car it is that they're driving in that commercial? Are they sold in the U.S.?

It's a Smart, made by Daimler. They are currently selling a US market version (little bigger, more power). I saw one a few weeks ago.

It's a Smart car. Originally not legal in the U.S., they beefed it up so that it would pass the safety tests. And it did.

    Barely.

But I do like the Bullet Bills on the sides of the Wii car.

As mentioned, they're SMART cars, small egg-like vehicles. Currently they're set for a US release date of 2008, with a version that has BAS to help increase it's fuel economy. (That is, when you're stopped/slowing down, the engine cuts out to conserve fuel when not needed.) However, many have made it in from Canada as a gray market good, or as part of a testing market, or sales attempt.

A few interesting tidbits, the body panels are removable, so you don't buy a paint job, you buy colored panels. You can even buy additional panels to have a multi-colored vehicle. They, and the vehicle, are also rather dent resistant as well.

Despite it's small size, it's surprisingly comfortable to sit and drive in.

Currently all mass market versions are Diesel, though the US will be a standard gasoline version.

If you're interested, you can read an article about a long drive taken in one in the US, Is America Ready For the SMART Car?

From what I've read, the Smart had better crash ratings than a European Ford Escort. Besides, even though statistics say that drivers of subcompact cars tend to have a higher fatality rate in multiple car crashes, it's the younger, faster, and inexperienced drivers that are more than likely to be behind the wheel of subcompacts.

You didn't hear about the Semi who hit one and drove for quite some time before realizing something was stuck to the front of his truck.

I've seen a grand total of one Smart car on the road, which is quite amusing considering that there was a showroom full of them within 10 minuites of my house for 2 years.

They were about £8,000 ($15-16,000) over here, which is about the same price as a 4 seater supermini from a big name manufacturer and about 2 grand more then something from Korea.

They're all over the place up here. Can't cross the street without stepping on one.
