The extra kibble on those Sqweek concepts really gives the impression that he was meant to transform in the movie originally.

That's kind of like being grateful for dog shit over horse dung.

Wish we got this version - toy would have been easier to engineer & would have been more accurate

That said - I probably should grab the DLX on Amazon.

It's weird how many different designs there were for Canopy. It makes me wonder why they settled on reusing the Long Haul body.

Because it was cheaper. And since the character dies within 2 mins as he appears, it would have been a waste of money modelling a new CGI model.

I don't understand why they made Sqweeks so ugly in the film. They had cute concept art...

I'm sure creating an entirely new CGI model would be expensive, but wouldn't it also cost quite a bit to have all this concept art commissioned in the first place? You don't see this many pieces of art for other throw-away characters. It just seems weird that they considered so many different ideas, only to end up with a reworked design (which hasn't even been seen any any concept art yet).

It kind of makes me wonder if Canopy was going to survive for longer in an early version of the script. That would be worth a new design. Maybe once his role was cut down, they figured they'd just reuse an old design.

Or maybe I like the final design used over what wasn't used. And your hate for it has no impact on my tastes.

CG effect models are loads more expensive than concept art, and are also different areas of the budget. Having something commissioned as concept art is barely a drop in the bucket.

I actually don't outright hate it as a objective design, I'm just being snarky.

Looks worse but if combined with the movie they might have made the ultimate sqweeks.

Yeah, I like the movie design better too. If the character isn't going to transform, I think it's important that it be clear what he transforms into. This is kind of hard to tell. Plus, this version is less cute. I do kind of like the idea of the gauges expressing emotion (I'm curious how that would work visually), but I'm glad they went with the simple, big eyed design.

Man the wasted potential, I can actually see a good story and a nice movie based on this designs. I would've loved to see a sweet story about runabout bots on an anti-cybertronian world, If the movie was just about Izabella and the underground bots It probably wouldn't make the best numbers but would have been a little fun heart warming film :)

Honestly...I think a movie like that would have done better numbers. I've seen a lot of people say that the Chicago/junkyard stuff was the most interesting part of the movie, and then it kind of lost them when it got to the secret history storyline.

Personally, I think a story like you describe might have been better suited for a spinoff...or even a live-action show. They could build a bunch of small practical robot puppets like Sqweeks to keep the budget low (maybe only Canopy would be CGI). They could have various episodes where the minibots and Izzy have to escape various Decepticons and TRF soldiers, while finding new robot and human friends to join their little community of survivors. I would have loved something like that, it felt like there was more of that story to tell.

I agree, mostly. Setting aside "heart warming" is not how Bay rolls; considering what we got didn't make the bank they wanted, maybe exploring an idea like this would've done better.
