OK, that makes no sense whatsoever, but people do think that, huh?

Of course they started out as a rock band, then played pop. The big turning point was Rubber Soul. That album is simply amazing, and it encouraged Brain Wilson to make Pet Sounds, which is also a major achievement in music, at the time.

From then on, the Beatles did some amazing stuff, they changed how bands mix albums, they allowed a producer to help them arrange the music, the White Album is incredible.

If you want to label the Beatles as pop, that is Pauls' fault. John wouldn't have written what he did without him, though...

I think the Beatles are okay. They're listenable, and I won't deny the influence they had on the music scene, but they don't make my 'favorite band' list. Just a matter of personal taste.

To me their best stuff was when they first started, anything that came from their "experimental" phase, is unlilstenable. But that is just me.

Grew up in a house where my Dad was a Beatles fanatic .. learned to play the guitar to Beatles music .. I do believe they changed the way music was approached and have a ton of appreciation for the way they did their 3 part harmonies and put their songs together.

They transitioned... if people only listen to the "pop" period, then sure, but they were so much more than just "pop" music.

To me, any music from the '50s and '60s are simply the Golden Oldies, "Oldtime Rock 'n' Roll." The Beatles will always be rock 'n' roll stars in my opinion.

The Beatles' music, as well as the solo music put out by the individual members, grates on me a lot and I will always change the station if they happen to come on the radio in any capacity. Just not to my personal taste.

That said, their influence and impact on the evolution of music is undeniable and I can at least respect them for that.

    This

... but they were and always will be corporate sell-outs from the very beginning to the very end. I love the Beatles to death, but the money came first and foremost then came the music...not that I came blame them for that since it was the money that allowed them to create all the great albums that came after Rubber Soul.

Other than "I Am the Walrus", I have no use for the Beatles.

Hmm, a thread tied to the Lars one? Ok, I'll cut and paste.

Ignorant eh? That's cool. I mean i've played guitar for 22 years professionally and also teach music. But that's cool.

I've taught alot of Beatles songs to students,.....because they were
    'easy to play' pop songs.

Obviously you love the Beatles, noones knocking them. But they're not a hard rock band, or even a rock band. Wanna hear a rock band? Listen to Guns N Roses or AC/DC, do they sound like the Beatles? Nope. That's because they don't play pop.

Now listen to Stevie Wonder. Sounds a bit more Beatlesque doesn't it? That's because it's pop music.

Don't hate on pop music, there's some good songs there. It's not an insult, it's just a label. And what was 'heavy' 50 years ago isn't heavy today.

Look at Metallica. They were Heavy Thrash Metal, then just Metal, now they're considered Hard Rock, even though they still play Thrash guitar when they want.

One day Metallica and Megadeth will be 'easy listening elevator music' and we'll all feel old.

    That's life.

I only started this because some people don't understand what the Beatles did for music. They fucking rocked, at the time. The Byrds did too. Then Neil Young, The Who, ( not a fan of the rolling stones ) Led, Black Sabbath, not in that order...of course.

All I can say is that I have blisters on me fingers!

The Beatles are pop-rock. True Sixties rock would be the Grateful Dead, the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and Jefferson Airplane. :rock
