Gail Simone's Secret Six is a book focused on a team of six (although currently there are more hanging around) supervillains, who work as mercenaries for both heroic and villainous clients.

At the moment, their roster consists of:

-Catman: A former joke Batman knock-off, Thomas Blake reinvented himself by living amongst a pride of lions in Africa, becoming an utter badass with dual clawed brass knuckles. He serves as perhaps the most moral member of the team.

-Deadshot: A veteran Suicide Squad member and death-seeker, Floyd Lawton is one of the best shots in the world. Sullen and snarky, he has a weird friendship with Catman, and both of them are pretty sure that one will end up killing the other one day.

-Scandal Savage: Lesbian daughter of the immortal caveman Vandal Savage, Scandal served as team leader and coordinator until being ousted by Bane, with whom she shares a weird-but-sweet surrogate father-daughter relationship. She battles with dual arm blades known as the Lamentation blades, and is "damned hard to kill", able to survive gunshot wounds to the head. Currently dating Liana, a stripper who cosplays as Scandal's deceased lover Knockout of the New Gods.

-Ragdoll: Son of the original Ragdoll, Peter Merkel was born without his father's triple-jointedness, so underwent hundreds of painful surgeries which replicated and surpassed his father's abilities. Unfortunately, these surgeries also covered his bodies with scars and stitches, and necessitated the removal of his genitals (he didn't seem to mind- they just got in the way). Easily the most wacky of the team, with an eccentric, foppish streak a mile wide. Speaks in a unique, italicized font.

-Bane: The man who broke the Bat, Bane serves as the team's strongman, and utilizes his vast tactical knowledge to great effect as team leader (Simone managed to remove nearly all Bane's villain decay, as she did with Catman- in fact, Bane's weaned himself off of his Venom addiction, and has achieved an almost Zen mental state). He gravitates towards Scandal and dotes on her, even interviewing her dates.

-Jeanette: Professional dominatrix and immortal banshee, Jeanette has been around for hundreds of years. An old friend of Scandal, whom she met in the gulag, she is almost instantly drawn towards a relationship with Deadshot, whose high body-count attracts her. Created specifically by Simone to fill the constantly changing sixth slot in the team for the ongoing.

-Black Alice: The newest member of the team, teenage superhero Lori Zechlin can steal the abilities of any magic-user and command them with instant expertise. She's perhaps the only being in the DCU to find Ragdoll attractive.

Also currently hanging out with the team are Killer Shark (a humanoid shark with an offbeat personality and love of eating virgins), and Giganta (a size-shifting Wonder Woman foe who may or may not be sticking around in upcoming issues- her, uh, primary motivation for sticking around has already been eliminated, so to speak).

I'll be frank: Secret Six is my favorite comic on the shelves at the moment. It's dark and violent, yet also bloody hilarious, making it a lot lighter in tone than many of DC's other, less dark and bloody books. Do yourself a favor and pick up an issue or two. You won't be sorry.

For those of you who prefer to read by trade, here's the team's chronological appearances:

-Villains United: The team's debut. Guest-starring Alexander Luthor's Secret Society of Super-villains.
-Infinite Crisis Companion: Contains the one-shot Villains United special, which isn't absolutely essential (basically, the team decides what to do in the wake of the Crisis), yet is still a good read.
-Secret Six: Six Degrees of Devastation: The team's first One-Year Later appearance.
-Birds of Prey: Dead of Winter: A crossover between the Six and Simone's other book at the time. A fantastic read.
-Birds of Prey #109: Knockout dies, Scandal mourns.
-Salvation Run: One of the good bits of Countdown, this mini shows the villains of Earth being exiled to a supposedly deserted planet, where they try to survive. The Six themselves only appear occasionally (the group is disbanded at this point), yet it's instrumental to the later Danse Macabre arc, and, to an extent, Bane's involvement with the team.
-Secret Six: Unhinged: First ongoing collection.
-Secret Six: Depths: Second ongoing collection.
-Secret Six: Danse Macabre: Third ongoing collection.
-Secret Six: Cats in the Cradle: Fourth ongoing collection, to be released soon.
-Secret Six: The Reptile Brain: Fifth ongoing collection, to be released in May.

Any other Secret Six fans out there?

There are times when I am really impressed by this book's ability to peer into the extremely messed up psyche's of career criminals, murderers, and psycopaths, showing us the real humanity that even those we would dub "monster" possess.

And then sometimes I just wonder what it's like to fuck a butterfly.

    :p

Yeah, love Secret Six. One of the best books on the market these days. Incredibly messed up in just about every way, but also consistently hilarious and occasionally heartwarming.

It's probably all squishy and awkward...

I'm keen on seeing the team take on the Doom Patrol again next month. There's some mighty unfinished business there, and despite dwarfing the DP in terms of numbers, I have a feeling that the fight is gonna be pretty close.
