Lucky you! I have no idea where to throw my vote. There's so much amazement up there.

As this is the Effects Award, I encourage everyone to put tutorials in here and maybe a little story about it came about.

When I started the Classics War, I really wanted to bring the TF's to their own world of burning buildings, space, and metallic interiors. I didn't want to bring them into a world of carpet, giant furniture, or cat hair. I wanted to be able to help the suspension of disbelief in my story-telling. I like where I was able to get to a lot more than where I started. The results always were pleasing to people.

However, it takes a long time to write a full issue. Besides the obvious side-effect of taking a long time to do an update, it also was a struggle to not work on the appearance more than the storyline. I eventually took a break because I felt my writing was suffering in favor of accomplishing these backgrounds. When I continue the Classics War, I definitely plan to do some Starfire_MK2 type set ups to help push some scenes along and continue my backgrounds where needed.

Working with Backgrounds in GIMP. I usually have about 120-130 backdrops saved on my PC for my semi-realistic comic. If I see one that looks awesome while browsing around the internet, I save it. Sometimes it inspires scenes, other times I just figure I can use it along the line at some point.

Here, well start with a night time city picture I found somewhere.

It'll be your base background layer and for the most part will remain untouched. Next, we want the subject inserted. Here, I blatantly stole someones awesome picture of Superion including some sword I wish I had. We'll put this awesome picture within the city, not just OVER the city.

Next, we have the hard part about cropping the bot from the background. Using an eraser sucks and leads to messy lines. You could use the background to transparency method, but then you get translucent bots. The best method is to use the Path tool in GIMP. Simply zoom in to about 500% and start tracing a path.

I do mine in chunks because sometimes the path gets messed up and you end up having to start all over again.

Once finished, you now have just the bot over the base background layer. Simply use the move tool to place him where you want. Here, I placed him right "on" the building, because I plan on having him stand on the street below.

Now create another layer that's an exact duplicate of the background. Your layers should be stacked thusly:

    Copy of background (foreground)
    Subject (Superion here)
    Background

Go ahead and cut out a huge chunk of whatever isn't needed. Here, I cut all the way down to just above the building tops so I can take care of that in better detail.

Using a similiar Path tool method as we did on Superion, the foreground building rests nicely over Superions feet giving him the appearance of standing behind the build (but towering the heck over it).

Now you have some obvious stuff around the border of the bot. I like to merge all of the layers at this point and then gently blur the edges of the bot into the background. It gives it the more natural appearance. Don't use too big of a tool or over-do it, otherwise you'll have a blurry bot with a clear center.

Finally, add some effects. There's tutorials in this Tutorials Sticky Thread for nice eyes and weapons glows. It's pretty easy. All I did here was feather the sword tip, then do a smaller feather inside with blue to give it that glow look. I used a lighting effect to give it that Voltron-esque feeling of right after "...and I'll form the head!"

Some clean up and cropping and you get a decent representation of a giant robot combiner just chillen in the city on a Saturday night.

Ended up voting for CI. I'm still amazed at his weapons materializing effects.

This is going to be my favorite category so far--just ahead of "Most Developed Character." There's some great stuff from a lot of people for sure.

I will say, and I don't mean to spoil the magic. But those "uber-realistic" lighting effects? I used a flashlight. That's why they looked real, is because they were.

And I was JUST about to ask you to make a tut about them :lol
I had experimented abit with them before, one time I used a flash light but thought to myself "Naaah... Couldn't be THIS easy, could it?"

On a more thread related note...
This was one of those times that I wish that more than one person would tie up for first place :p
ALL of the entries (and really, I DO mean all of them) deserve to win!

Yeah, the flashlight and penlight effects work great. Especially in darker settings, though not limited to. Mix it with the photoshopping and you can get some really cool stuff out of it.

Wow, there's some really amazing ones here. This is gonna be tough.

And I have to disqualify my Grimlock image. I'm flattered someone nominated it, but it's from 2010. Remember it for next year ;)  But there's lots of Megatron damage scenes from 2009 :p

    ARRGH!

    This one is HARD!

Well, I probably hurt my chances with that little Peacock Man stunt...

Seriously, I lust after some of these effects, creepy as that sounds. Pun-3X has always had damage effects I've greatly wished I could replicate... even his earliest comics are better than anything I've produced so far. Obsidian's Lament is just quality all around, and Kweh's effect there was brilliant. I've also tried and failed miserably to reproduce Chaos' 'Rez' effect... which sucks because it's really really awesome.

I had to go with Pun-3X, just because of how long that particular effect technique has stood unchallenged. No one dismembers, burns and otherwise mangles bots like Pun-3X.

... On a related note, Chaos, if you tie me for this category, I challenge you to a duel! Unkillable Robots at dawn! Landmine vs. Scourge, your Undead Ninja Zombie Not-Pirate vx. my Flamey Scion of Bastardness!

Polenicus got my vote. How did I end up in this poll, anyway? I am honored, whoever picked me out for this, but I won’t win. Not against the guys from whom I learned what little I know. Just being on the list made my day!
