    Hi all,

I've just watched the trailer for the Japanese version of Transformers The (Animated) Movie. It looked pretty cool and a bit different from the western version. Does anyone have any idea where i can get hold of a copy or maybe a site I can download it from?

    Cheers

What you've seen there, I'll wager, is a "trade trailer," which featured a bunch of footage from the movie when it was in-production, and which was later cut out. Extended transformation of Autobot City? Magnus in different colors? Yes? No, the Japanese version of TF:TM is just a dub of the ordinary English version. Sorry. :)

Its the same as the US version, minus the cool 1980's voice acting.

    Oh, that's awesome...

Uh, anyway, TFTM in Japanese only had a couple of minor differences besides te voice acting. It shows the names of important characters on the screen as they're introduced, and it has some alternate/additional sound effects in some scenes. Amazing :p

Yeah, I have the Japanese release of the film on LD and the differences are inconsequential. But if I recall correctly, it has that trade trailer on the disc as well. I should try and cap that and upload it to YouTube at some point if it's not already there.

Such examples include Prowl & Ratchet having dialogue, the Decepticons/Destrons screaming as they jump out of Cyclonus' way, Starscream giving a huge scream as he gets blasted by Galvatron, and several Decepticons/Destrons screaming as Optimus/Convoy charges & fires at them.

And a much better "metal munching" sound for Unicron at the beginning of the film.

On the brightside, Masamune Issei doesn't yammer on through the whole film.

The voices for the film are good (save for Shockwave, whose Japanese portrayal I never liked) but they talk waaayyyy too much, sometimes ruining iportant scenes.

Like when Prime dies, in the US version everything goes silent as Daniel falls over, weeping. In the Japanese dub, you hear Daniel WAILING at the top of his lungs (well, *her* lungs since it was a female voie actor) and it sounds totally obnoxious and ear-splitting. Less can be more, Japan. Think about it.

Also didn't like how they dubbed in all the Decepticons screaming off screen as Prime shot them. I mean, it made the scene really *really* funny but...I don't think it needed to be.

They also dubbed in the Insecticons screaming a response after Megatron orders them in ("Breach their defenses" in the English version). They played the Insecticons off as "cute" which I sorta kinda liked, but not all that much.

I think a cartoon dub, regardless of language of origin or translation, will not be as good as the original. Also, remember all those English dubs that insert dialogue off-screen and otherwise eliminates silence with background dialogue? Looks like it works both ways.
