Emiliano Santalucia, who does freelance design on Transformers for Hasbro, did a panel at TF Nation over the weekend, and I've written up a detailed panel report here:

Emiliano Santalucia Toy Design Panel at TF Nation – The Allspark

There was some really interesting insight into a bunch of recent Generations figures and the process of developing a figure in general!

Interesting that he designed both Thundertron and Alpha Trion.

So Alpha Trion originally had one alt mode? I wonder why they added the extra space ship one then.

Did they do the same for Galvatron?

    That was insightful.

I suppose someone higher up later decided they should add the Headmaster and triple changer features to all the TR Voyagers. Alpha Trion and Galvatron, though, probably would have looked better without the spaceship modes.

So it never was going to be a good update to the Cybershark mold. Lovely.

    Yeah, we can tell.

    Dammit.

So.... we would have gotten an Alpha Trion that would be redone as Razorclaw?

    'Tis a damn shame.

I am wondering if the extra alt modes (specifically the spaceship ones) were added for the inevitable remolds.

That news about soundwave's guns not making it into the final tooling is a major bummer.

Presumably, though we only saw robot mode art so we can't know for certain.

    Sometimes, ignorance is bliss.

Alpha Trion resembles an updated Victory Leo to me (I wouldn't be surprised if Takara release his mold as such, and besides, they already got a fairly recent Alpha Trion :)  ).

Galvatron, though, could be anything. Maybe a new heavily remolded Voyager Shockwave. Who probably also has a secret submarine mode.

There was art shown some time ago for Galvatron that had the third mode jetfighter. So at some point in concept sketches it was there.
