    Tis true: http://boxofficemojo.com/alltime/domestic.htm

Who would have thought. This weekend, domestically here in the U.S., the Transformers movie with surpass Pirates of the Carribean: At World's End in domestic gross.

Has the TF reached its peak, or will it make enough to surpass it's next potential victims: Return of the Jedi, and then Star Wars:Attack of the Clones.

With Transformers being released on IMAX in September, the unthinkable might happen: Dare I even ask, will TF surpass.....The Lord of the Rings:The Fellowship of the Ring?

Lord Of the rings?? Eh maybe. Its a big maybe. Pirates yes. Jedi and Clones?? Most likely. LOTR?? I really dont know. It would have to have some major legs to do that.

On it's current legs, no way.

But with the news of the IMAX release September 21, you can probably add another five million....which could make it squeak past LOTR.

    Which would be unreal.

I doubt LOTR, but I can hope - and that's only cuz it means TF can take on Shrek 3 (which was crap)... LOTR was a better movie over-all to TF.

But still - it's doing great - and doesn't it still have yet to open in the homeland of TFs - Japan???

Now if only this hollywood strike BS would come to a quick end!

Only if you think Pirates 2 was equal in awesomeness.

    It also sucked.

It did, and like most other parts of Asia, took top spot in the local Box Offices. Some records were even broken.

yeah Pirates 3 was a let down, although it was entertaining. and it'd be MADNESS if TF passed LOTR. stick that in the face of non-believers and geewunners who thought the movie would suck. im definitely driving 5 hours to the nearest iMax to see it a couple more times.

I don't believe IMAX takings are calculated in regular theatre box-office totals, are they?

Well, POTC:AWE was better than Spider-Man III, I'll tell you that much hombres.

But if there's one movie I don't want Transformers to surpass, its LOTR. Do not touchith the mantle it rests upon; KO Star Wars for all I care.

Once Transformers is released to IMAX, it has a good chance of overtaking Return of the Jedi and Episode II.

That would be cool if Transformers passed Pirates 3, 'cause I definitely think Transformers was much better.

Although I would be sad if it passed Fellowship of the Ring... since I think LotR is better than Transformers.

Dead Man's chest was the best IMHO.

At World's End was very disapointing, hard to follow, and seemed like a prolonged soap opera. Was it entertaining? Yes. But they tried to do waaaaaay too much in the time they had. They could have squeezed an entire other movie out of the material they squeezed in there.

You know what's really impressive. By passing POTC3, it slips into even the vaunted adjusted-for-inflation top 100. Beating ROTJs gross almost 25 years later isn't particularly impressive, but nestling unarguably into the Top 100 of All Time puts it in pretty damn exclusive company. 300 and SM3 had pretty sizeable IMAX runs of $20M+. If TF gets even half that, it'll wind up well inside the 90s.
