Because all of us on TFW are buying 3 copies of Transformers so we can get the store exclusives.

I don't think you have to worry, they'll keep pressing them if people keep buying. The exclusives on the other hand are probably going to be limited (to how many who knows).

kind of off topic.. what happened to the other heavy hitters this summer? they came out in theater.. and then never heard from them again.. I mean spiderman, pirates, shrek and harry potter.

Transformers came out after/same time, and its out on DVD already.. where are the others?

Wow. That puts the earnings of this film (rounding to about thirty bucks per unit) very close to a billion. And it's just the first week. I know of at least three cheapskates who are waiting for someone to buy this thing for them for Christmas.

    A billion dollars.

    Wow.

With all this titanic gobs of cash coming in, from the theaters and the DVDs, it makes one wonder...

Was all the product placement really necessary to cover the cost, as I believe was claimed.

Could they have done more - I remember Bay saying in one feature that they had to curtail some things because of cost.

And, does this mean they'll give the sequel a bigger budget?

I'll be curios to see how things shake out after Harry Potter, Spiderman 3, Shrek the Third and such come out on DVD. Regardless, I had a feeling this would sell well, but had no idea it would top all other DVDs for the year in a week.

The Transformers are more on top than they've ever been before. And I don't see this wave ending anytime soon.

The front page post is a little off. According to the article, 4.5 million was the number of copies sold on it's first day, and has sold 8.3 million copies in it's first week. So records set by this film for 2007:

Most DVDs sold in first day (4.5 million)
Most DVDs sold in first week (8.3 million)
Most HD-DVDs sold in first day (100,000)
Most HD-DVDs sold in first week (190,000)

    ...damn!

Bay said Speilberg was tight on the reins as far as production went. He stressed that in a couple interviews I've read & seen. It almost sounded like it was a training exercise Speilberg put Bay through.

I think I've read somewhere that someone in the production team was going to give the go ahead for a bigger budget if this thing does well. Looks like we'll get that even more spectacular sequel. Personally, I find that movies like these do better when the director is constrained (that might have been Speilberg's reasoning behind the financial allowance).

Yes, product placement was necessary to cover costs. Costs are an up-front thing that have to be dealt with. There was no real way to know how well a "big budget" movie about giant freakin' robots would draw, so earnings were estimated at around the budget alloted for the movie, $150 million. Which, by todays movie making standards, is peanuts for an FX blockbuster. Those costs needed to be written in stone LONG before earnings could be adequately gauged. However. . .

Uh, yeah. $150 million in, $700 million out, and that's pre DVD sales. To say the sequel will get a bigger budget is a minor understatement. Don't expect it to get budgeted at $700 million, but don't expect it to be budgeted at less than double what the first movie was budgeted at either.

It's odd you guys don't have Spider-Man 3 on DVD yet, it came out over a month ago here....Shrek 3 is out next month, a few days after TF is.

Damn 8.3millon it doesnt surprise me one bit i work at a target and the copies were flying off the shelfs at a crazy rate. Every half and hour we had to refill the endcap because it was totally empty. The deluxe set with the transforming case was selling off the charts. congrats to the website for making it onto the dvd.

Wonder if 'foreign sales' are even factored in.
I bought mine from Play.Usa and it's the dual-language cover Canadian release - I'll still be buying the UK Play.com exclusive though....
