I don't mind the twist ties so much. I just use a pair of wire cutters and snip them all. Fastest way to get to that new toy! Now if I can't find that pair of wire cutters...I do end up cursing those damn twist ties.

I do agree that it looks nicer in the package without the twist ties.

I say bring back boxes with styrofoam!

I hope this is a permanent move away from twist ties. I hate them with a passion, maybe it wouldn't be so bad if they didn't use 15 ties for a deluxe.

Dint Hasbro mention something about moving away from twist ties at Botcon? Either way good news as I'm sure everyone hates these dang things.

Ever since I purchased my first Transformer as an adult, Takara's Super Mach Alert back in 2000, which came packaged in the dual-layer vacu-formed plastic, I've been waiting for Hasbro to follow suit. It's just so much simpler to remove from the package, and makes for a better presentation (although SMA came in an opaque box). So all I can really say is that it's about time, and I hope it's permanent.

Same here. Fosterlager and funkatron101 were in the room with me when I opened my Lockdown, and all I remarked was "Wow, no twist ties." I naturally assumed it was due to the figure, not a brand-wide changeover.

So far, every other deluxe I've bought since has had twist ties (all in Cincinatti after the con).

Nail clippers are sooo much easier. Just make sure you use a separate pair for your actual nail-clipping.

I'm sure the EPA would love to hear that. :lol

    No more Tie Wraps?

    NOOOOOO!!!

Anyway depending on the thickness of the plastic insert it might indeed have less volume than the twist ties. Also a well thought out insert can be placed in a singular location and thus be considerable smaller. Also since twist ties have to be manually inserted (by cheap labor) there's a possiblity of labor errors, packers using too much material (ever get a twist tie with an extra 6" of material?) and the cost of having some one sit there and tie in the toys for 8 hours a day.

Anyway that's all I can think of from my days in Production Engineering class.

Maybe this is Hasbro's subtle way of separating all the Animated figures with QC problems like shit paint jobs & assembly errors (twist ties) from newer & better batches (plastic tray).

Yeah I doubt it too... *sigh*

I don't know about that. Obviously it may depend on each figure but the amount of plastic on an average of 4 twists per deluxe has got to be less than the plastic shell. Plus in terms of carbon footprint I'd image they both would have one since they both get manufactured. ;)

My point in the twist ties being more green is because they're reusable as opposed to the extra shell.

But you're right when you look at the way Hasbro packages all their toys they definitely could be more green. Though that would probably eat into their profits so it's not gonna happen anytime soon.

Thats what I meant, didn't state it correctly. Both processes have Carbon Footprints. But as to which footprint is larger, that is up in the air.

I would think that twist ties would have a bigger footprint, simply because they contain metal and plastic, while the shell (though larger) is only plastic. I'll admit, I'm no chemist or manufacturer of said products, just speculating.

There is also the other end, what happens when people throw out the packaging?

*pauses for cries of shock and dismay*

Some keep the ties with the box and all; some throw out the ties. Quite a few of us are probably somewhere in between.

I bought six different Animated Deluxes in Southern California at a local Walmart last week and all of them are held in place with twist ties. Whatever makes it easier for me to replace the figure back in the packaging gets my vote.

Trying to determine the impact to the environment based solely on which one has more plastic is extremely short sighted.

I wonder how many non-tie variants come per case.
