whoah, that original Astro proto must have cost a bomb!
A Great article as always, crisp, clean pics, very descriptive, you show off the figure in all its glory, and youve tempted me to get both the Commemorative + Original Astrotrains (Commemorative for the OMG Teh Hawtness box-art).

I wish we had a smiley of a jaw dropping. Was NOT expecting to see the original prototype in the comparisons! You've outdone yourself with this one!

    Super awesome Maz!

I'm going to attempt and repaint my junker Astrotrain into the anime correct astrotrain so that when I'm finished the purple is dark enough.

I am sooo glad I disposed of that gay looking thing. That pink irrited me so.

I never noticed the real proto had no toes, before.

Outstanding effort Maz! You truly outdid yourself on that one! I always enjoy your articles.

I am a proud owner of e-hobby Astrotrain which I have opened and applied stickers (oh yeah!). I was lucky enough to get him when they first came out and paid roughly $50 if I recall. As much as I'd like to sing Homer's "I am so smart" song over that, I passed on getting e-hobby Sunstorm for about the same price (so I'd have to spell it "S-M-R-T").

Your article has inspired me too; I think I'll track me down the US reissue to go with it...

    Cheers!
    Sush.

The eHobby deco is crap. Paint him in the proto colors. That's the real deal right there. That's what makes you a man. I've said it before, they didn't nail the deco. Pink is not purple. We can argue the terminology forever, but just look at the original. Unless the original looked pink 20+ years ago as well. :p  I can't understand why 99 out of 100 times HasTak can't nail a good purple but an old promo figure can.

BTW, awesome gallery and pictures. Truly indepth and satisfying!

I actually prefer the black and white colors for being true to the real vehicles, but the E-hobby color scheme is still way better than the mismatched G1 released toy.

For me the colors for the E-Hobby version are ok for the Dark Grey part, but the pink is plain ugly. The orginal Astrotrain had the purple right but the white was plain ugly. The reissue colors made no sense to me at all. White and black. That is not Astrotrain from the TV/MOVIES in any way shape or form. How can they even call that a reissue. So as far as I am concerned, other that the proto which does not exist in my dojo, Astrotrain has yet to be painted and released correctly to this very day. Even the bloody classic version was painted incorrectly. Oh well, I guess I am holding out till someone figures out that Astrotrain was Dark Purple and Dark Grey and that is the end of it. Then re-release that version for $50. Then I will dish out cash to buy it.
