Since Anime began we've had dozens of robots coming out of the mech genre of Anime and Manga some of which are among the most famous like Gundam,Mazinger Z,Getter Robo,Evangelion,The Big O,Guran Laguann etc. Even Transformers can be conisdered as such in rare cases

However there's one robot which isn't well known in the western world that actually started the whole giant robot genere of Anime and Manga. Which is Tetsujin 28 the Godfather of robots in Japan.

I first found this out by watching the Americanized version of the character called Gigantor which is pretty well known among older people and I must say the story it brought as well as the characters while simple a the time seems so charming and it's a wonder why he isn't well known as Astro Boy since Tetsujin started the Giant Robot craze in Japan. Hopefully one day he'll be more well known here in the USA and also to get translated versions of the original manga as well

He appreared in 4 TV sereis which Shotoro Kaneda the boy who controls him have adventures throughoutt he world stopping crime and evil robots.

Here's the intro from the 60's version.

    Akira - "Tetsujin 28" Opening - YouTube

    Then the updated 80's version

    Ironman 28-Intro-Acb - YouTube

Then a 90's verison which looks like a Gundam clone to me.

Finally a remake of the original 60's version which came out in 2004.

    Tetsujin 28-go opening - YouTube

So yeah he has quite a history. :)

3 years ago IMAGI before it went bankrupt had thought of doing an adaptation of Tetsujin 28 called T28

    Tetsujin 28 -

I was REALLY looking foward to it and it's a shame that is wasn't reliezed. It would've brought Tetsujin back on the Anime map.

BTW there was a live action film and a play.

60s. It was on after Astro Boy (60s version also) at like 1:30 in the morning. Thank god I've been able to get a lot of sleep since then.

I honestly can't remember one bit of it. I only recall falling asleep about 10 minutes through one of the episodes. I think it had robots in it.

In other words, it was boring as heck. Or I was just very very tired.

You should try out his 2004 series then. It's more deeper and serious while keeping the fun aspects of the story.

Here's the channel for the first 17 episodes of the 2004 remake. There's 26 in the complete series but it's the best I can do so if you have time or if you want check it out. :)

Ugh. I'm already feeling like falling asleep. It's like a curse or something.

I dig the 80s one because robots/mecha having pupils are just creepy as hell to me, but I kinda dig the 90s take of the character..a cool design and man I would love to see Gigantor/Tetsujin 28 meet Godzilla either the Heisei version or final wars that to me would be interesting.

I'm not sure if you follow SRW or not, but it looks like Tetsujin 28 (well at least the 80s version) is finally getting the recognition it deserves in the modern giant robot gaming community.
