Doesn't London have thousands over security Cameras up everywhere on the streets? It seems odd that they want to take pictures of the general population, yet will arrest anyone trying to do the same thing.

The police handling of photographers in the UK is atrocious and some of the worst abuses of power I have ever read about. Look up the story of the bloke who was accused of being a pedophile for taking photos of his own son on a ride in a mall.

Not just London. Apparently there are more security cameras across the country than in any other country in the world. On average I seem to recall if you live in a city, you have your picture taken 300 times a day or something ridiculous like that.

I remember that one. Yeah, it's a bit of a nanny state here at the moment unfortunately :(

Go ahead, make fun of America, but we can take pictures of our cops all we want.

Since when are cops "members of armed forces?" Must be a British definition.

I think that's more of an incentive than a punishment. ;)

Wow. The UK is shaping up to be the real Orwellian Nightmare.

This law is bullshit... they're taking this WAAAAY too far. Abuse of power is putting it mildly.

What happens if a person takes a picture of say a friend and a cop end's up the very close background, Does the person still get 10 years in jail?

Hey, this law is long overdue. If people are allowed to photograph cops, how are cops supposed to get away with killing innocent people?

Does that mean American tourists can't take pictures with those guys that don't move?

I wonder how much those guys get paid. All they do is stand around all day.

This is actually a very valid question. As a photographer and somebody who plans to move to Europe (Germany not the U.K.) this kind of question is very much something to consider.

This is a real drag to see. Photography is hard enough in a post 9-11 and post internet pedophile fear mongering world.

Wow if this is lawl is intended to reduce lawsuits against police I think its gonna have the opposite effect. If I remember right, British officers aren't armed and one of the reasons they brought all the cameras in just for their CYA? Sorry I never really kept up with it although now we have cameras down at the Oceanfront in Va. Beach I probably should have.

    England Prevails!

I forsee a spurring on of the development of tiny, hidden cameras that download all images remotely.

They will never know they are being filmed.

I took a photograph of a cop coming out of a doughnut shop last year. Perhaps I should destroy the evidence
