I thought I was a fan of "Macross" all these years...I had no idea that I am merely a fan of the "subpar edit" that is Robotech.

Man, I need to get with it.

SDFM is the point where the mecha genre hit the perfect balance between creative drive and commerical appeal IMO. Belivable characters, reasonably well structured plot, good music, timeless designs and a much better discussion about serious issues then UC Gundam ever managed.

Its one of those shows where all the right people worked together at the right time and made something magic. Even in the earlier part of the series where they had virtually no budget, dudes clearly worked thier balls off to get the important stuff right.

First anime series I ever watched. Definetly a classic, I dont care who you are or what you say. You know you're a fan if the phrase "Pineapple Salad" gives you a short pang of sadness.

I agree with all 10 points. I started with Robotech, then I found out it was a Macross and I have never watched Robotech since. Even though I have dvds of both series.

I've been meaning to watch Macross for a while. It's on my to-watch list with like 50+ other anime series.

The list is right on the mark. Macross is AMAZING. Those dog fights in each series is always done so well. Plus I do love the music. Too bad many will never see Macross for what it really is.

    Also remembered another thing...streaming missiles.

Having re-watched Legend of the Galactic Hero's somewhat recently I give a lot of credit to Noboru Ishiguro for Macross turning out so awesome.

I'd agree with that, Ishiguro is hugely underated IMO and I think that the other two Macross TV shows suffered because they didn't have a director of his skill to keep everything in balance.

I've got to mention Ichiro Itano as well. If you compare the combat sequences in the stuff he worked on (SDF, Plus, Zero) with the stuff he didn't (7 and Frontier), theres a clear difference in quality between them.

    10. For truth. I was blown away by DYRL.

Like most kids growing up in the 80's, Robotech was my first exposure to it and even if it was butchered, it really was unlike everything else on TV. Sometimes I wonder if watching shows like that is a part of the reason why I'm so into narratives and narrative structure.

Macross is nothing without the Itano circus.
