Does anyone on the board have any of these? I've been thinking of getting 1 of the two and wondered if anyone can answer the last question I have. I've been able to find out most needed information about feeding, enclosures and health. The last question I have is how many times a year the actually enclosure needs to be completely changed? The only thing i've seen is 1 site mentioning roughly 3 times a year but was never able to confirm this with another and it does seem like along time to wait.

    3 times should be plenty.

As an entomologist, I must face my fears of arachnids. So, I have a Mexican red rump tarantula, a Emperor scropion and a vinegaroon as pets right now. I have kept arachnids as pets as to overcome my fears. Quite frankly in terms of your questions, it's really up to the pet owner. I for one, never changed the setting inside the cage. The most important element you'll need to consider is maintain the best environmental conditions for your arachnid pet (ie humidity), especially for moulting purposes. Selection of arachnids as pets are extemely important. Don't get arachnids that are extremely aggresive and venomous( ie baboons and chevrons). Even the most experienced enthusist will have a difficult time with them.

Yeah i've heard good things about Emperor Scorpions and I think the Tarantula was called a Chilean Rose.... can't remember exactly. Those are the 2 that I am deciding between.

The Chilean Rose is the best starter arachnid to get. They are the most docile arachnid anywhere in the world. She can be handled with ease and tend to be pretty predictable with their habits. Scorpions, on the other hand, especially Emporers are rather unpredictable. It can be handled, but one never know if the critter will strike. A rule of thumb with scorpions is never handle them, even when you think they're docile enough. I started out with a Chilean Rose and kept her for almost four years before she died of natural causes. She will always be my favorite and hold her close to my heart. My vinegaroon named Goliath is approaching that favoritism that few arachnids like my Chilean Rose have done already.

Yeah, I am with you on that one. I would much rather have a snake.

    No legs > 8 legs.

You love what you love, logic had no real answer for it.

I'd not have one as a pet, but hey...whatever floats their boat.

Just got off the phone with the pet store and they were sold out of the tarantulas which is what i've decided to get. Have to wait until they get another shipment but they couldn't tell me when that was going to be.
