Here is a brief interview of Mr.Hironori Kobayashi printed in Figure OH! magazine.
The original scans by Masabon can be found here.
Mr.Kobayashi is known for developing TFs such as Car Robot Speedbreaker, many Binaltech figures and is in charge of MP and Alternity series.
His previous interview on Alternity can be found here.

As always huge thanks goes to Sol Fury for a revision. I suppose he's gone back to his awesome Christmas hauls now :D

I truly love these insights and thought processes of the designers and how they came about to making their product. I've said these numerous time, I like MP RC a lot.

It would be interesting to see if he has some sketches of the possible one-piece transformation where Rodimus Convoy incorporates his trailer. That would be really neat to see.

Cool, thanks for this. It's always nice to hear what the designers behind these toys have to go through, some of the reasons why things are done as they are, and what little things that they throw in that they are really proud of. Even better when it's for a figure that I'm anticipating soooo much!

I love every bit of this interview, the switching arms, the combining gun, and the transparent waist piece really show that he went through every detail about this figure in its toy and film/cartoon appearance to make it as awesome and special a release as he could. I love this stuff.

He should be proud. The Masterpiece line is a marvel of engineering. Highly impressive.

Is he really trying to imply that the original Rodimus Prime toy was any good? XD

Yup, that was a big mistake. The seeker mold looked fine in the prototype pics that surfaced, why oh why did they have to change it?

On topic, that was a great read. You can really tell that a lot of love is in this toy. The arms rotating from the movie will keep me transforming it to Hot Rod mode for a while. I agree with him about the trailer. Something had to be sacrificed to make the toy represent the character. Look how bulky the legs are on the Titanium. I let Classics Rod slide because it is a reimagining of the character but for a G1 interpretation, it needed to be a seperate trailer. The fact that it has a specific transformation into Rodimus Prime mode and not just the car turned around is awesome too.

Remember people, there are limitations due to the level of toy design and the fact that not even G1 could agree on how Rodimus transformed. If I remember correctly, he never transformed the same way twice in the movie. This will most likely be my second favorite Masterpiece, I have them all so far. Optimus will always be no. 1 in my book with Grimlock a close third.

Like everyone else, I have to agree about the arm rotation. I always thought that was cool in the movie when I was younger. Reading this makes me happy to know that there are so many like-minded fans that are as geeked out as I am.

Great article. I wish we had this kind of insight for every figure.
