I thought so too, but I'm mostly just curious to see if Starscream sounds like Vegeta.

hah, guess not, but pause the video at 5:17 & tell me what you see.

Yeah. But Arcee's is quite similar to Ms. Sumalee's voice... Just slightly pitched. :)

Yeah, I got that vibe too (and somewhat the same from Ratchet's actor), but Prime & Cliffjumper totally threw me off couse of how different they were.

the one of Cliffjumper singing...kinda old news, I'm afraid- that was like the first episode aired last month, right?
Also, I noticed that big Japanese studios' etc have their own official Facebook/ Youtube pages now. that's awesome.

So what exactly are the talent standards the Japanese have for voice acting - just needing a name and a face? Because, wow, that is - as usual - some astonishingly awful voice over work yet again.

Well to be honest, I think part of that comes from not understanding the language, and as such, needing a little longer to warm up to or even recognize them. I've gone through that curve before when watching shows/movies/etc in other languages. Or uhhh, there's also that we're comparing them to some of the best voice work around in what we've gotten from guys like Jeffery Combs & Steve Blum (not to mention pretty much everyone on the English Prime cast & the Beast Wars guys who're still fresh in many of our minds) who're all held to a strikingly high standard.

Like, I get what you're saying about it not being as big of a focus, but I really do think language barriers & the fact that we're used to our own peeps plays a role in our perception too.

Well, I will say that it's not the language barrier that's the problem. They could be speaking French, German... whatever - it's that there is simply no noticeable voice acting to be found here. Just sounds like a bunch of people picked at random from the office to read dialogue. And it's something I have noticed about Japanese cartoons for as long as I can remember. Every once in a while you get to hear someone actually doing something with their voice & vocal range, but typically it just sounds like what is heard here. And for a country that basically invented & defined a worldwide style (Anime), one would presume they'd put as much effort into their voice over work as we typically take for granted over on this side of the pond. It's just so... lifeless & monotone.

That's just what Japan does. They need phrases kids can latch onto, even if it muddles the narrative and is extremely annoying. It's as if they can't trust the viewers to pay attention without constant dialogue.

    Yes.

Or it could be that the show is a dub of an American cartoon that is part of a franchise that outside of the movies doesn't do that well in Japan to began with

I doubt the top tier talent is lining up to work on this show

I don't recognize all the names, but Shizuka Itou (Arcee) and Jun Fukuyama (Jack) are pretty prolific and well-regarded Japanese voice actors. I think most of the voice work is fine, though some of the actors (Starscream, Megatron, Ratchet in particular) seem to be playing it over-the-top, probably because they're targeting younger kids.

With supervillains its all about the presentation. Megatron, usually, has this down pat. As long as it works, I'm all for a hammy over the top voice.

Yeah, this being a dubbing is totally relevant, and could easily contribute to why it seems bland. I mean, I feel the same way about Armada to some extent, and much of it has to do with dubbing over something that was made in a very different language.
