I'm deeply saddened to hear this, as it & Warehouse 13 are the only two shows on the channel that I actively watch... Say goodbye to the little town that could: Syfy cancels Eureka If Eureka goes, then so does my interest in spending any of my hard earned money on their television shows' DVDs...
Yep SyFy is going the way of MTV and other networks like it, they are phasing out the more expensive Sci-fi shows in favor of cheaper reality based series. For the price of one season of Eureka they can produce 3 shows like Ghost Hunters, Quantum cooking, and face off. So they are losing the audience that made them popular so the executives can pad their own pocket, say they are producing a profit, then leave to do the same thing to another network. So expect more wrestling and very loosely based scfi reality tv, and less actual Drama. Also more shows from overseas they don't have to produce themselves. It may only be a matter of time before Syfy has no Sci-Fi. The name change was the first warning. I currently only watch the channel twice a week on Mondays and sometimes Fridays. I used to watch it all the time.
First strike: name change Second strike: pulling anime block Third strike: now this...? Goodbye SciFi/Syfy
Haven is one of those "shows from Overseas" that Tekkaman Blade was talking about. Considering Showcase calls it an original series.
This does not surprise me at all. I still have issues with Wrestling being on the Friday night line up.
Your not the only one, that used to be Sci-Fi's night to dominate. Mondays verses all the other new cable and regular chanel shows makes no sense except to lower the shows ratings and give them a reason to cancel shows.
We shouldn't worry too much though as other networks seem to be taking up the slack. TNT is doing Falling Skies(which performed well), AMC is doing the Walking dead, ABC/ABC Family are planning a lot of Marvel Scifi shows. As these shows do better we will se more of them. If not on Sy Fy then elsewhere.
Pretty bummed about this but not that surprised. It's bad enough to wait a year between seasons. Wil Wheaton (Dr. Parrish) said they were supposed to start filming six episodes for Season 6 in October and Season 5 is currently filming in Vancouver, meaning they'll have to rewrite parts of these last episodes in order to wrap up the series. The worst part is that SyFy informed the press of the cancellation before informing the cast, so some cast members first heard about it via their Twitter accounts. Stay classy Syfy.
Basically from what I've heard the show costs a lot to produce and I guess their ratings, while good, weren't good enough for SyFy so they decided to cut the show's budget. The runners of the show basically said there is no way we can produce the same quality show on that kind of budget, so it got canceled. I just hope Warehouse 13 doesn't get the axe too. I've honestly been enjoying that show more than Eureka as of late. The only other shows I like on that station are Hollywood Treasure and Legend Quest.
it seems that Sci-fi hates its fan base.. MST3k was big ratings for them. But the president didn't get the show so it got canceled. Tremors the series did well (iirc), but was canceled. Those two shows to me were the death nail for that network. I seriously haven't watched them in years.
Disappointing, but not surprising. Sure, there is a good crop of science fiction shows out there now, but I always really liked the idea that there is one channel that delivered that kind of product. That used to be the SciFi Channel. Now it's the SyFy Channel - where we air everything but science fiction. Lame.
I'd love to see SyFy revert back to their old name and really push programming that shows just how deep science fiction goes. Show older episodes of Doctor Who, Twilight Zone, The Incredible Hulk, that old Spider-Man live action show, Lois and Clark, and Star Trek. Show new stuff like Battlestar Galactica, Eureka and Warehouse 13. Have a horror block, a comedy block, an animation block, a superhero block and yes, even a reality block. No wrestling though! Science Fiction is such a rich medium, there's no end to what they could do. Sure, it would cost some money to produce (I don't know how much it costs to get the rights to show series that have been around for awhile like Doctor Who and Star Trek) but I see no reason why advertisers wouldn't jump in.
SyFy's just another in a long line of organizations that got a tiny cough and decided that cutting its throat was more "cost-effective" than buying some medicine.
