I never had a SNES so i never got to play this until I bought the VC version last night. I love it, I know a lot of you have been waiting for this but most of you had played it before. to me it feels like Metroid prime in 2-d which makes me appreciate Metroid prime more. to make a long story short so far I love this game.
Can't believe it is only just now being released. You'd think the single best game in the franchise (and one of, if not the, best games Nintendo has ever made) would have been up on the VC much earlier. Have it for the SNES and I still play it all the time. Absolutely love it. Good to know people that missed out before can experience it now.
I just recently played through this masterpiece again on my SNES. If this is the your best chance to get it and play it, do it and you can die a happy person.
I was waiting for them to put this up on the VC....then my friends fiance gave me the cart. I'm soooooo happy...
I rented (read: rented and never returned) the cart from a video store last year. But it was a little buggy, you'd bump the system slightly, and it would erase everything on the cartridge. I went and bought a new points card just to download this (and possibly Paper Mario) and have thoroughly been enjoying it since. Great game.
I was hoping the month of metroid promotion on virtual console would usher in the first gameboy game for VC in the form of Metroid 2. Shame it didn't. I downloaded metroid and am playing through it. Might get super metroid next week.
If we had gotten it early on, People would have one less thing to look forward to in the future of the Virtual Console.
The reason why it only now got released was to coinside with the release of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. Metroid on VC comes out, week later, Super Metroid on VC comes out, week after than, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption on Wii comes out.
No matter where I go, what I do, some way or another, the theme to Brinstar (overgrown vegetation) always gets stuck in my head. It's that damn good. If you haven't done so yet, just sit for a few minutes and listen to the whole thing. This one clip of music still blows me away even over a decade later, and still sits high above most videogame soundtracks released since that time. Also, the boss themes are so epic, it truly redefines the nature of the beast. -Pit-
Despite being one of the easiest Metroid games Super Metroid still gets playtime on my SNES. The theme to Lower Norfair is one of my favoirte VG tunes.
I don't really judge a game if the actualy difficulty is too easy- if I did, Castlevania SOTN wouldn't be one of my favorite games. What both Super Metroid and SOTN do instead of providing frustratingly difficult bosses and levels is provide you with a ton of places to explore and give you the desire to uncover everything, which at least the first time is a hefty amount of gameplay for both titles. Either way, if you DON'T explore either of these games to get some of the extra powerups, then they WILL be difficult. Getting all the extra stuff and uncovering all the secrets just happens to make you a bit more powerfull then the bosses.
I sold my SNES years ago to Gamerz (its like a GameStop). They never got my copy of Super Metroid or Chrono Trigger. I can still beat Super Metroid under 2 hours AND have a 100% Item Completion raiting. I love that game.
My only question is am I going to have to buy a classic controller for it? I've downloaded it, and started to play, but saw a map to the select button, and no select button on my GC controller. If only the wife would let me use the TV...
Gamecube controller is fine, button's are just mapped to the snes controller. It's just a port; mess around with button.s
Super Metroid, Chrono Trigger, and Final Fantasy 3 are the best games to ever come to the Super Nintendo (or to any Nintendo system ever, in my opinion). I sold my SNES and all my games with it. I did reobtain Chrono Trigger and FF3 on my PS1 with the rereleases, but I was still missing Super Metroid. I downloaded it as soon as it was available for the VC and was so excited to get to play it again. Got 100% item collection, and beat everything in 2 hours, 50 minutes. Just enough time for Samus to get undressed at the end.
