I really enjoy the pics in this thread - am thinking about starting to take pics of figures in my collection. Had a few questions though:

1.) What non-mobile phone camera would you recommend? There was a link stickied on the first post that I think may have had info on this, but the site is now gone.
2.) Do most people use light boxes?
3.) What else would I need to get started?

There's some info that may answer some of your questions at the beginning of this thread. As for a camera, a good DSLR is what you'd need. For example, I have been using a Nikon D3200 for several years now. There's better cameras out there, but it does the job for now. Just look around for a DSLR model you can afford. The camera bodies aren't usually super expensive, older models are a bit lower. The lenses are where some of the big money lies. For instance, my main lens that I use which is a macro lens that captures minute detail on small objects, I paid a little over $400 for it, the camera itself cost just slightly less than that. Fortunately most cameras come with a basic lens that will get you started.

A DSLR is best, but really any kind of camera, including a decent smartphone camera, can get you started. A fancy camera will give you nicer images and give you a lot more options, but in my opinion other factors are more important than the camera. I was making pretty decent pics on my iPhone before I got my Nikon DSLR.

Lighting is the most important thing. Good lighting will give you nice pics from a phone, bad lighting will give you crap pics from a DSLR. Typically you'll want more than one light to cover multiple angles; for a "fully-lit" shot I use four lights. Your lights (for most shots) need to be diffused somehow, so you don't get harsh shadows on your subject. That can be done with a light box, with soft boxes attached to your lights, by shining lights through a photo umbrella or diffuser disc, or by bouncing light off of another surface. Right now I have a couple big studio lights with soft boxes as my top and front lights, and a couple little LED spot lights shining through umbrellas as my side lights.

The other important thing to have is a tripod. It will help even when you have plenty of light, and you'll have a lot more options for doing darker shots with long exposures as well.

If you can't get everything at once, I would recommend starting out by buying lights and/or something to diffuse them with, and a tripod, and getting a better camera after that.

Thanks brotha!!!:)  Really appreciate the kind words!!!:thumb  I think it's still worth it if it was $70-75!!!:)  He's actually great in hand and has a nice heft to it!!!:)  I figure that I got my foot in the door, so I'm gonna see this through!!!:lol  The biggest draw for me is that they are takara car-bot size while the DX9 offerings are a little too big for me!!!
