They weren't even allowed to wear hats. What is this? Why are the other kids getting burned (forgive the pun) for other kids who shouldn't even be out in the sun for long periods of time anyway?

ITT: Reason 196 for why you shouldn't do outside.

... seriously though, this is just yet another example of how the educational system is arguably just as flawed as it was in the 60's, if not to a much sadder degree. Yeah, I can somewhat understand the allergies, but the hat thing is ridiculous. I remember my schools (especially elementary) being ******ed about a lot of things, but never to the point of people being disallowed to wear hats off school grounds when it was hot outside. If anything, teachers often made us bring things like that (as well as water bottles for obvious reason), and we were even advised to bring sunscreen that was very mild & NOT to share it with other students for again, obvious reasons.

Pretty sure nobody died on field trips when I was a kid, even the guys who got attacked by ticks or tried to sneak into the girls' cabin on that camping trip.

I remember when my elementary school issued my friend an ultimatum during a field trip that was 50% hiking.
Remove your hat or don't get on the bus.

Looks like things haven't changed a bit.

I get the allergy thing, but I can't tell what the law is thinking in terms of who is being treated as stupider: the parents for buying sunscreen that their kids are allergic too, or the kids as if they're stupid enough to not know how to apply sunscreen. At ages 9 and 11. The hat thing also is confusing, I never understood why schools are so against them on field trips, since I know I was allowed wearing one during a third grade field trip to some old Indian burial mound.

I remeber when me and my school-yard friends used to get all high on sunscreen.

We started small: Bannana Boat, Coppertone.

But then we went on to the stronger stuff, we needed higher SPF, luckily I got off it before my friends were gunned down after they stole stock from the local Wal-Mart.

Huh, that's funny. When I was a elementary school kid, I was always told to bring a hat to any field trip I went on by my teachers, even to the museum.

But wow, I really hope those girls are alright.

Zero tolerance and over zealous protectiveness in the face of fear of legal action at it best.

fear of allergies? i'm pretty sure they would know if they were allergic to sunscreen, and the other kids should too. at least enough to know not to get it on them if they are allergic.

If I ever decide to have kids, sure as shit I'll be protecting them to the extent I feel they need to be. I don't need bureaucrats from a fucking public school system deciding what's better for them than me. If they need sunscreen, they're bringing sunscreen. If they are outdoors for an extended amount of time, they'll have hats. Common fucking sense people.

What a stupid law to not allow sun cream. It's not the problem of the school what pupils have on their body or not. This law is ridiculous.
