It depends on what you are looking for. If you want a stand alone, I'd recommend G Gundam. The original Gundam is pretty good, but only the movies have been released in it's original Japanese with English subs. Don't start with Zeta, you really need to watch the original to understand it.

Ghost in the Shell (1995 movie )
Vampire Hunter D ( both of 'em )
FFVII:Advent Children ( Does it count as an Anime ? )
    Appleseed Ex Machina
Gunslinger Girl ( they need to make more of this !! )
    Berserk
    Initial D
    Neon Genesis Evangelion
Blade of the Immortal ( Anime series is just as awesome as the manga )
    Akira
............ these are the first that come to mind.

I like giant robots. Gundam, not so much.

Shin Mazinger was freaking awesome, though I do still need to watch the last few episodes.

I have to admit to enjoying the new series Kämpfer. I've seen it described as being the embodiment of everything that's wrong with anime today, and having no right to be as entertaining as it is.

Rideback was pretty good. Dancer on a mech-cycle, messing up warriors on armed mech-cycles. Be warned, there's a death scene that happens off camera, but still manages to be absolutely brutal. You know exactly what happens, and your imagination fills in the gaps.

Finished watching Season 2 of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya about 2 days ago and I liked it, besides the whole "Endless Eight" clusterfuck.

Can't wait for the movie next year.

I can't believe I missed this thread and I will seriously take up on some of the recommendations. For me, these are mine and they're pretty "old schooled":

    For mecha lovers:

    i) Mobile Suit Gundam (TV series)

The original series that started the "craze" for military mecha. The original series has its moments and memorable characters. Example, Amuro Ray and Char!

    ii) Mobile Suit Gundam (movies)

A condensed version of the TV series but with some changes in plots. While the animation is good and storyline feels tighter, I don't like some the changes such as 'Dom Battle' and "Texas Colony Battle". Animation can feel dated though. X)

    iii) Zeta Gundam (TV series)

I found this series pretty dark example the deaths but the characters and mecha are pretty interesting. Feels different from the original Gundam but in a good way.

    iv) Char's Counterattack (movie)

Amazing mecha fights and the "supposingly" final showdown between Ammuro and Char. I wished it was more than a movie but a series.

    v) Code Geass

I'm unsure where to fit the mecha in. But the plot and characters are interesting and complex. Love some of the plot twists!

    Super robots

    i) Shin Mazinger

Hot blooded robot action and can be silly at times but really enjoyable.

    ii) Mazinkasier

As above but different mecha! LOL!

    Others:

    i) Fist of the North Star (TV series)

Brutal fights, exploding limbs, manly tears, feuding siblings etc. I definitely enjoyed this anime. But I have to warned the viewer that the animation can feel dated.

    ii) Dragon Ball

The one that started it all. I enjoyed Goku growing up and seeing him matured throughout the series is indeed memorable!

    iii) Dragon Ball Z

Really good to watch but I felt that it got too draggy towards the end. It would have been perfect if they ended it at the Fieza saga.

I've just finished watching every Macross series/film (I've taken far too long to get into this franchise) and I have to say you really cant go wrong with Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Macross: Do You Remember Love?, Macross Plus or Macross Frontier. Macross Zero is fairly decent too.

I'd avoid Macross II and Macross 7 like the plague though.

Anyone seen Diebuster? (also known as Gunbuster 2)

Re-watching the original Gunbuster right now and was wondering if it was any good.
